Plus, any purchases below $25 will no longer require a signature, meaning you can safely buy that latte while keeping human interaction to a bare minimum. Sony intros G-Series micro HiFi iPhone / iPod systems, blends retro looks with modern features

Sony’s got a reputation for pumping out forwardly-designed wares, but its new G-Series micro HiFi systems are a blast from the past — at a glance, anyway. Both rigs are MP3 and iPhone / iPod-compatible via USB and will be available in two different configurations. To start, the CMT-G1BiP / G1iP feature 60 watts of RMS power with DAB packed into the former for those who find only having AM/FM is passé. Next up, the CMT-G2BNiP / G2NiP add WiFi for getting your stream on from the Web or a PC and can be remote-controlled with a free iOS app. The “HiFi” moniker mixed with iPod connectivity might have audiophiles raising a brow to sound quality, but the brushed metal console and its piano-gloss satellites are lookers none-the-less. A single variant is currently listed on the Sony UK site, although there’s not a squeak regarding cost or release dates. For now, we’ll refer you to the PR after the break.

Logitech launches Squeezebox Controller app for Android phones and tablets

We’re not certain this is the “ground-breaking new product” Logitech was hiring Android engineers for, but Squeezebox fans packing an Android tablet or phone have something new to download now that an official remote app is available. It gives full control over WiFi to all the Squeezeboxes you can fit in your home and brings the usual controls, metadata and album artwork from player to your mobile’s screen. While we’re still keeping our fingers crossed for a Vizio-style Android music box in the future if you have a 2.1 or later device in hand and a Squeezebox Touch, Boom, Duet or similar on the end table, you’ll want to head directly to that Market link below or check out the full description on Logitech’s site.

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone & iPad updated with video out support

If you have an iPod, iPhone or iPad with the SlingPlayer Mobile app, you now have a Slingbox to go since the app was just updated with support for video out over component cables in high quality mode. Version 2.1 also includes a few unspecified bugfixes, but we’re figuring the opportunity to watch TV, on a TV in high bitrate streams is more than enough to get users mashing that update button and digging out their unused connectors.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Motorola Backflip keeps up with the times — receives Android 2.1 update

Motorola Backflip receives Android 2.1 update

If you weren’t lucky enough to be one of the 1,000 users recruited by Motorola and AT&T to test Android 2.1 on your Motorola Backflip, today is the day you can join the party.

The Eclair update is live and well on Motorola’s and AT&T’s respective websites. We weren’t crazy about the Motorola Backflip, or the fact that it launched with Android 1.5, but hopefully this update will improve the Backflip experience for current and future owners.

So what are you waiting for?  Check the links above and begin your update process.  And while it’s downloading, feel free to check out the release notes so you can know what to expect once you’re up and running on 2.1.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 update begins rolling out this weekend

If you listen carefully, you can hear the cheer of X10 users all around the world celebrating their impending update to Android 2.1.  Scheduled to begin on Sunday in Nordic countries, this 2.1 update will crawl around the world, one market at a time over the coming months.

Although the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 didn’t perform as well as we’d hoped, we were optimistic that its flaws would be ironed out with updates, but unfortunately, the x10 family has been stuck on Android 1.6 since its launch back in August.  The hardware inside the Xperia X10 isn’t cutting edge, but it certainly isn’t outdated by any means.  Whatever reasons Sony Ericsson had to launch the X10 with an outdated OS remains a mystery to us.  I can say with a certain measure of confidence that the X10 would have been received better had it been loaded with Android 2.1.  Here’s to hoping an Eclair is all the X10 needed to achieve its full potential.

But I digress.  Xperia X10 users, get ready to start enjoying your device even more.  Check out the list of enhancements after the break.  [via Sony Ericsson Blog]

Motorola Cliq to receive 2.1 update soon

Cliq 2.1 update

The Motorola Cliq is set to receive the Eclair (2.1) OTA update in a couple weeks, as the T-Mobile employee training guide for updating has leaked out. No word yet on specific dates, but Cliq users should be happy that they will finally receive 2.1.

Even though there are no dates, there is some information Cliq users should be aware of. The update will require 30MB of internal memory as well as 100MB on the SD card. The update should also take about an hour to complete. (Unlikely, but that’s what they say.)

We will keep you updated with the more information we hear. Rest assured Cliq users, Eclair is coming! [TmoNews]

Android 2.1 on the Dell Streak brings many improvements

Dell Streak

One of the disappointing aspects of the Dell Streak is that it initially comes with Android 1.6. (The most disappointing aspect is that those of us outside Europe still can’t get one.) Even though Dell has promised that the upgrade to Froyo will come quickly, those who have become familiar with 2.1 have a difficult time going back.

Dell has announced however, that it be upgrading to 2.1 early next month to satisfy customers until they are able to roll out 2.2. The Streak is much improved with 2.1, as Engadget recently demonstrated.

First off, the camera will be capable of capturing 720p video, which is a very welcome improvement. Secondly, the default keyboard on the device is greatly improved. From the time testers were able to try out the Streak, the on-screen keyboard has been one of the biggest annoyances. Dell has removed the numpad and caps lock keys, which has improved the experience dramatically. Multi-touch is still missing, which would be a nice feature, but we can’t get everything at once.

One of my favorite apps on the Nexus One has been the Gallery app, which integrates with Picasa. With 2.1, the Dell Streak will now use that as the default app for pictures. I think it’s one of the best integrated features of Android and it’s too bad when OEMs or carriers replace it with something else. Streak owners will be happy to know that they can enjoy seamless Picasa integration.

Another feature that will come with Eclair is pinch and zoom with Google Maps, which is a nifty improvement.

Android 2.1 will bring other improvements as well; to see those, visit the link at the end. It’s a great sign that Dell is committed to their device and seems to be listening to its customer base. Let’s hope that continues to be the way they handle their Android handsets in the future. [Engadget]
