Samsung Galaxy Nexus Launches in the UK, YouTube Channel Updated with New Videos

This image has no alt text

The day many have been waiting for is here…if you live in the UK, that is. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is now available for purchase and the phone’s landing page has been updated to reflect as much, providing links to snag the phone via Phone4u, Three UK, Carphone Warehouse, Vodafone, and O2. Samsung tweeted out a photo of the first customer to pick up the brand-new Android 4.0 smartphone, one Alex Ioannou.

Google’s Galaxy Nexus YouTube channel has also been updated with a new minute-long ad and plenty of “getting started” videos highlighting the major features of the phone. If you have been lusting for this you will want to check them out; you even get a glimpse of Verizon’s LTE version of the device.

So UK readers, who is going out to pick up the Galaxy Nexus today? Anyone already have the world’s first Ice Cream Sandwich handset?

Android Gingerbread has growth spurt, grabs 38.2 percent device share

Gingerbread has apparently made a substantial mark on Android users, with new figures showing it holds a 38.2 percent share of all Google OS-powered devices. That’s some kind of growth from the one percent sliver it held earlier this year. Froyo still remains dominant at 45.3 percent, but fragmentation continues to shrink, with 95.7 percent of all Google-coated devices now running Android 2.1 or above. These figures, taken from Android Market statistics over the last two weeks, give a pretty good illustration of the gulf between Android smartphone and tablets, as well, with Honeycomb versions accounting for a meager 1.8 percent. But the tablet version will likely get a boost from Ice Cream Sandwich — which, as we all know, is just around the corner.

Samsung announces three Wave handsets, dripping in Bada 2.0 and ChatON

It’s shaping up to a be a busy IFA for Samsung. Barely 24 hours after announcing its new ChatON messaging client, the manufacturer is now gearing up to release a troika of new Bada 2.0-powered Wave handsets — the Wave 3, Wave M and Wave Y — set to make their debut this week in Berlin. Leading the pack is the Wave 3, which leaked earlier this week. Powered by a 1.4GHz processor, this little guy boasts a 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED display, 3GB of memory (along with a 32GB microSD slot) and a five megapixel, auto-focus-enabled shooter. The Wave M, meanwhile, packs slightly less juice, with a 832MHz processor, a 3.65-inch WVGA screen and 150MB of onboard storage (with a 2GB inbox and 32GB microSD slot). Rounding out the collection is the Wave Y, with its 3.2-inch HVGA display, 832MHz engine and two megapixel camera. All three feature your usual smattering of WiFi / Bluetooth 3.0 capabilities and will ship with ChatON and Samsung’s Social Hub baked into their DNA. No word yet on pricing or availability, but you can find out more in the full press release, after the break.

White Samsung Galaxy S II Confirmed for O2, Orange, Vodafone, and Three

This image has no alt text

Most major UK mobile retailers are now listing the upcoming white variant of the Samsung Galaxy S II, following the plan laid when the handset was announced for a September release. O2, Three, Vodafone, and Orange have all added the paler Galaxy S II to their “Coming Soon” lists, with T-Mobile UK being the only major player yet to confirm the handsets release. Chance are TMo UK will still get the Galaxy S II, most likely in time for its September 1st ship date. As has been stated before, the white variant lacks any differences from the version already released. If the timing works out or the color is a big selling point, it may be worth the wait. Otherwise you can skip the wait and grab the Galaxy S II now.

Android Overload: Motorola XOOM Sees $500 Price Point at Costco, Samsung Replenish Solar Charging Busted?

This image has no alt text

Here are some of the non-juicy bits from the newswire today. Just because they aren’t too interesting to us doesn’t mean you should miss it. In fact, that Infuse 4G with Gingerbread is sure to tick some AT&T users off. I’m sure AT&T will be delivering an update of their own sometime soon, though anything can happen with the forthcoming launch of the Samsung Galaxy S II. Oh, and a XOOM WiFi for $500 at Costco? That’s right in line competitors. Let’s see if it makes a difference in overall sales figures and let’s hope Motorola gets the message if it does. Anyway, I’m not supposed to be telling you all of this here: find out for yourself below!

T-Mobile UK, Three, and O2 to Stock HTC Sensation after Vodafone Exclusive

This image has no alt text

With the newly announced HTC Sensation looking mighty tempting, folks from far and wide are wondering when they will be able to get their hands on the sexy new Android device. In the United States, T-Mobile will hold an exclusive of the device, but in the UK the Sensation should find its way to all major carriers. Vodafone gets the Sensation first with exclusive sales rights for one month, but shortly after that period expires T-Mobile UK, Three, and O2 all plan to carry the device.

T-Mobile UK says they will score the device in June, meaning Vodafone should see it in May. Pricing hasn’t been made public, but it has been confirmed to be comparable to the pricing of the Desire HD when it first launched.

Nokia X7 with Symbian ‘Anna’ now official on Three UK (Updated)

So, it’s official. The Nokia X7, unfit for a US launch, has finally found a home with Three in the UK. The heavily leaked stainless steel handset runs an updated Symbian^3 “Anna” (aka, PR2) OS that finally introduces a vastly improved browser and portrait QWERTY with split-view data entry among its 50 new enhancements. Rounding out the specs are an 8 megapixel cam with dual-LED flash, 4-inch OLED ClearBlack display, HD video recording, and 256MB RAM / 1GB ROM with an 8GB memory card tossed in the box. You’ll find the press release, video, and more pic after the break.

Update: Nokia tells us that the X7 features 720p video recording, and a 680MHz CPU — presumably the same old (and we mean old) ARM 11 proc and found in the N8 and E7. Oh, and it’s the same Broadcom BCM2727 GPU and 8 megapixel EDoF camera we reviewed in the E7. The X7 will be available in Q2 with a price set at €380 before taxes and subsidies.

[Thanks, Will B.]

Samsung Galaxy Pro Launches on Three UK for 150 Quid

This image has no alt text

Three UK is now stocking the Samsung Galaxy Pro. This device was introduced with very little fanfare but looks to be a viable option for those who are looking for a Blackberry-style expose QWERTY keyboard. This device won’t rock the socks off of you performance-heavy types with its 2.8-inch 320×240 resolution display, Android 2.2, 800MHz processor and 512MB of storage but it’s still a pretty decent phone if you don’t care about all that stuff. Three’s holding it for 150 British pounds on PAYG plans or for as little as free on a two-year tariff. Check their site out for more details. [via EuroDroid]
