Sony Ericsson 5.5-inch Android hybrid device in the works

Sony Ericsson Android device

Is it a phone, or is it a netbook?  With a 5.5-inch screen, a cellular radio, and a hinged slide-out qwerty keyboard, it’s a little of both.  We don’t know much else about the device, except what was leaked to engadget — it is supposedly launching with stock Android 2.1 sometime this fall.

If it follows SE’s track record with smartphones, expect to see it sometime next year, everywhere but the United States.  Please Sony, don’t disappoint with this one of a kind gadget.  We all love the way your electronics look and feel — even us Americans! [Engadget]

Android powered Dr. Eye makes its debut

Dr. Eye is not a super villain. Actually, it’s Invantec’s new Android powered pocket-sized mini netbook. It sports a clamshell-inspired 4.8in touchscreen along with a full qwerty keyboard, and is also equipped with 3G, WIFI, and even a front facing camera. Dr. Eye (I really like saying that ) will be powered by a Marvel 624 – the same CPU found in the Dell Aero. For a device running the ancient Android 1.6, the $400 price tag may seem pretty hefty. But if it’s any consolation, Éclair will be making an appearance in the near future. An official release date has not been announced quite yet, but according to the video, it should be right around the corner. Be sure to check it out after the break. [via Engadget]

Acer Aspire One D250 Android Netbook Gets Reviewed

That Android Netbook craze sure died down a bit once Chrome OS was officially unveiled, didn’t it? In any case, the guys at pocket-lint have gotten their hands on one of the Android netbooks available, the Acer Aspire One D250, and gave it a full review. The Acer Aspire One D250 dual boots Windows 7 Starter Edition and yep, our very own Android OS.

It’s your run of the mill netbook: 1.6 GHz Atom chip, 10.1-inch screen, tiny keyboard, and small footprint. The Windows 7 side of things performs admirably but it’s the Android we’re interested in, right? Well, sad to say, Android on a netbook seems to be nothing more than a gimmick. Though it boots fast (16 secs vs Windows 7′s 1 minute), the performance isn’t ideal. Pocket-lint termed Android on a netbook as ‘stumbling’, ‘crude’, and ‘not [an addition] that is very compelling’. Hit the link for the full review.

So we guess, for the time being at least, we’ll have to temper our expectations for an Android netbook. And we guess that’s okay since Android isn’t intended for Netbooks anyway..
