ASUS Transformer Prime pre-order shipments delayed at Best Buy, Amazon

ASUS’ Eee Pad Transformer Prime has already suffered a few setbacks on its march to the US market and unfortunately, it looks as if another obstacle may be on the horizon. According to a handful of tips we’ve received this morning, Best Buy has been sending out emails to users who pre-ordered the new tablet for delivery this week, informing them that shipments have been “back-ordered,” and delayed by one to two weeks. This means, of course, that some buyers may not receive the device until after Christmas

BlackBerry Playbook gets massive, temporary $300 price cut in Canada

Playbook sale

So, PlayBooks haven’t exactly been flying off the shelves… anywhere. Not even in RIM’s native Canada. But that might actually change over the nex few days as BestBuy, Walmart, Staples and Future Shop have chopped $300 off the price of the QNX-based slate. The sale lasts from November 16th to the 22nd in Quebec, and the 18th to the 24th in the rest of Canada. Now, they’re probably not going to eclipse the iPad in sales anytime soon, but a $200 16GB PlayBook is a much more compelling proposition than a $500 one. The WiFi only 32GB and 64GB models are also being discounted to $300 and $400 respectively which, in case you’re not mathematically inclined, means the 64GB BlackBerry tablet will actually cost less than the 16GB version normally does. Obviously, though, you’ll have to be quick — we’re sure this fire sale (tundra sale?) will have stocks running pretty low.

[Thanks, Shawn]

Toshiba’s Portege Z835 coming to Best Buy for $899, aims for featherweight belt

This, readers, is the Toshiba Portege Z835, and it’s on its way to a Best Buy near you. As Laptop Magazine reports, the company’s new Ultrabook (and latest addition to the Z830 family) is available exclusively at Best Buy for $899, fulfilling Toshiba’s promise to break that sub-$1,000 barrier. (At the moment, we’re not seeing it on the retailer’s website, though we expect it to pop up pretty soon.) By comparison, that’s $400 less than the comparably sized MacBook Air and about $300 less than ASUS’ Zenbook UX31. Weighing in at less than 2.5 pounds, this featherweight is powered by a 1.4GHz Intel Core i3 CPU, boasts a 13.3-inch display with 1366 x 768 resolution and ships with 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD. But is it worth it? Well, we’re currently testing our model, and will have a review for you to consume in the very near future.

Best Buy to close UK operations, 1,100 jobs in jeopardy

Best Buy Europe, the joint venture between Best Buy Inc. and Carphone Warehouse, has been shuttered after just 18 months in business. In that short amount of time, it lost £80 million ($127 million), largely due to consumer belt-tightening and increased competition from cheaper online retailers. Up to 1,100 jobs will be lost at the eleven UK stores currently open in Thurrock, Bristol and Wolverhampton, among other locations, bringing to an end the company’s ambitious plan to open 200 stores across Europe. At the same time, the US giant declared it would buy out its European partner’s stake in the Best Buy Mobile chain as it continues to pull out of unprofitable foreign operations.

Update: We’ve got some more on what this deal means. Buying out Carphone Warehouse is gonna cost $1.3 billion plus $8 million annually for five years. The two aren’t splitting up for good, since they’re also starting another joint venture called Global Connect (good luck with that one, fellas). Separately, the company announced it was grabbing mindShift technology, a cloud service provider for small and medium-sized enterprises for a cool $167 million.
