Galaxy Nexus coming to Bell and Virgin Mobile Canada December 8th, pre-orders begin today

Time to start whoopin’ and hollerin’, Canada — not only do you have a date with the Galaxy Nexus on December 8th, you can begin pre-ordering it on Bell and Virgin Mobile today. Getting your phone ordered early ensures that you can have the $160 handset (after a three-year commitment, of course) shipped out “as soon as it’s available,” but it doesn’t necessarily guarantee your brand new treasure will show up on launch day. Bell’s got a promo going on that we don’t recall having seen before: a Twitter line-up. The idea is to sign up on the site on December 1st between 10am and 11am (EST), claim a spot in the virtual line and you’ll be given a message to send on Twitter. Then, return to the site once an hour until 10pm and tweet out the latest message. If you remain in the top 100 when all is said and done, your Galaxy Nexus will be guaranteed to arrive on the 8th. ‘Course, given the amount of interest circulating around the phone, it’s probably best if you’re on the site ready to get your Tweet at 9:59am. Check out the press release for the deets.

How-to: use Google Music from anywhere (yes, outside of the United States)

Now that Google Music has finally clawed its way out of the realm of beta-ware, anybody in the US can sign up to play without an invitation. Of course, that leaves many folks out of the equation, so we thought it a good time to point out at least one other route to let you get involved in the service, no matter where you live. See, the rub seems to be that Google checks your IP address on your first attempt to log in, and accept its terms of use — only the first time, and yeah, you’re definitely going to be ignoring that doc by following this guide.

So, in essence all we need to do is find a way to gently tiptoe past that gatekeeper and we’re home free. Keep in mind that while you can upload your music, buying new tracks isn’t going to happen until it rolls out in your neck of the woods in a more official way — but hey, most of a good thing is still a good thing. There are various means to get this done, and we’ve found a pretty straightforward route, and if you’re up to it click on through to the guide.

Motorola Motokey Social set to Like Telus November 21st

We’ve seen the official product page of the Motokey Social, a new Facebook Phone with the special blue button, and we knew it was heading to Telus. All we needed to seal the deal was the date, and now we have it: the Motokey Social and Telus will change their status to “In a Relationship” on November 21st, and you can take part of the festivities. It’s no Android, of course, but it offers as 3MP camera, 2.4-inch QVGA (320 x 240) touchscreen display, five home screen panels, social network access and the Opera Mini browser for data. And at $80 as a prepaid option, parents up north may be looking to pick a few of these up for the young ‘uns on Black Friday. More info can be found in the press release after the break.

BlackBerry Playbook gets massive, temporary $300 price cut in Canada

Playbook sale

So, PlayBooks haven’t exactly been flying off the shelves… anywhere. Not even in RIM’s native Canada. But that might actually change over the nex few days as BestBuy, Walmart, Staples and Future Shop have chopped $300 off the price of the QNX-based slate. The sale lasts from November 16th to the 22nd in Quebec, and the 18th to the 24th in the rest of Canada. Now, they’re probably not going to eclipse the iPad in sales anytime soon, but a $200 16GB PlayBook is a much more compelling proposition than a $500 one. The WiFi only 32GB and 64GB models are also being discounted to $300 and $400 respectively which, in case you’re not mathematically inclined, means the 64GB BlackBerry tablet will actually cost less than the 16GB version normally does. Obviously, though, you’ll have to be quick — we’re sure this fire sale (tundra sale?) will have stocks running pretty low.

[Thanks, Shawn]

Roku planning to bring set-top boxes to Canada, UK in early 2012

It’s been a big year for Roku. The streaming content box manufacturer launched its Roku 2 HD, XD and XS this summer, with a $50 LT model coming just last month. Now, the Netflix / HBO Go / Angry Birds player will cross the border into Canada and the U.K., with the expansion set to begin in early 2012. The company is looking to build its 350 channels with region-specific content, which can be provided free, supported by ads or with a subscription — and if you choose to add your own content to the service, you’d certainly be in good company.

Blackberry Bold 9790 cleared for landing in Canada, Roger(s)

RIM’s reduced re-imagining of the Bold 9930 is barely out of the starting blocks, but Canadian carrier Rogers is promising to have the Bold 9790 ready for the native BB faithful before the end of the holiday season. It combines a 2.44-inch capacitive touchscreen with a fret style keyboard and a 1GHz processor. There’s nothing more specific on release dates and prices just yet, but we’re hoping the diminutive screen and slightly less premium build will translate to a reduced price tag. Doors to manual and cross-check.

CRTC rules against traffic-based internet billing, touts ‘flexibility’ for small ISPs

Chalk one up for the little guy, because Canada’s telecom regulator has finally come down in favor of independent ISPs — ostensibly, at least. Earlier this week, the CRTC ruled that major providers will not be able to bill smaller operators based on bandwidth usage, effectively reversing a controversial policy it implemented (and eventually rescinded) back in February. Under the ruling, heavyweights like BCE and Rogers will be able to sell their bandwidth to smaller ISPs on a monthly basis, with rates pre-determined according to the network capacity each independent operator requires. Large companies can continue to charge flat monthly fees, as well, but they won’t be allowed to impose the same traffic-based billing that many apply to individual consumers. The regulator explained the decision thusly: “This wholesale billing model, which is based on capacity, will give independent ISPs added flexibility in offering competitive and innovative services to Canadians.” For more details, surf past the break for a dose of PR.

Galaxy Nexus headed to Bell and Virgin Mobile in Canada, Three in the UK (update: Rogers too)

We expect there will be more to come, but you can now officially add at least three more carriers to the list confirmed to be offering the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Those include Bell and Virgin Mobile in Canada, and Three in the UK, which joins O2 as a confirmed carrier for the flagship Ice Cream Sandwich phone across the pond. The two Canadian carriers aren’t offering a firm release date or pricing details just yet — though they’re happy to take your email address and keep you posted — but Three lists an off-contract price of £499.99 (or just under $800) and is promising “earliest delivery” by November 18th.

Update: You can now add one more to that list — Rogers has confirmed on Twitter that it will be offering the Galaxy Nexus in January. Reservations start tomorrow.

China Telecom looking to expand into US consumer market, eyes 2012 launch

Instead of resting on its laurels as China’s third-largest wireless provider, China Telecom is now looking to branch out into relatively uncharted waters — namely, the US consumer market. In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Donald Tan, president of China Telecom Americas, confirmed that his company plans to bring its own branded wireless service to select US markets next year, in the hopes of capitalizing on the large Chinese communities and consumer bases scattered across the country. According to Tan, the proposed service would provide customers with handsets that could be used in both China and the US, theoretically appealing to Chinese-Americans, students or businessmen who travel frequently between the two countries. The exec didn’t reveal much in the way of pricing, saying only that it would be “competitive,” though he did acknowledge that the service is already undergoing trials with several unnamed wholesale partners. If the trial goes swimmingly, he added, China Telecom may expand it to Canada, as well, and would even consider purchasing or constructing its own network in the States (pending FCC approval, of course). The provider, which has already been marketing its services to US corporations for a decade, also has the capacity to spend “hundreds of millions or billions” on stateside acquisitions, though none are currently on the table. “We want some acquisitions in the U.S. and other countries on this continent,” Tan explained. “It’s a very quick way to growth.”
