Apple sues Motorola over multitouch on its Android smartphones
Another day, another patent lawsuit. And this time around it’s Apple suing Motorola over multitouch on nearly all its Android phones — basically everything up to and including the Droid X. In addition to the multitouch infringement claims, there’s also:
- Object-Oriented System Locator System
- Touch Screen Device, Method, and Graphical User Interface for Determining Commands by Applying Neuristics
- Method and Apparatus for Displaying and Accessing Control and Status Information in a Computer System.
- Support for Custom User-Interaction Elements in a Graphical, Event-Driven Computer System.
Needless to say, this will take a while. And, no, if Moto loses it doesn’t mean your phone will be taken away — it just means Moto will have to either change how it’s doing things — and/or pay a bucketload of money to Apple. Cliq XT gets official Swype update, fixes for touchscreen, stability
T-Mobile’s Motorola Cliq XT is getting an update, but it’s not yet the Android 2.1 update we’re all waiting for. Instead, it’s your basic maintenance update. Here’s what’s being fixed:
- Overall phone performance: Users will notice a significantly improved overall performance and responsiveness to input requests, including: opening applications, answering calls, opening the Happenings widget, and downloading attachments and pictures within email.
- Additional stability: Improved stability, resulting in fewer occurrences of unresponsiveness and/or programs quitting unexpectedly.
- Bluetooth performance: Improved performance and connectivity with other Bluetooth devices.
- Messaging: Prevents erroneous notifications that a message has not been sent. Also resolves MMS sending / receiving functionality issues in certain scenarios.
- Touchscreen: Improved touch screen sensitivity and touch response.
- Swype: Includes updates to the latest version of the SWYPE software, resulting in improved overall performance of the application.
Motorola still has the Android 2.1 update slated for late Q3/early Q4, so we’ll have to hold out a little longer on that one. [Motorola] Thanks, @sandtiger!

Devour won’t be getting Android 2.1; Motorola updates other time lines
This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise, as the Motorola Devour already is listed as end-of-life, but now it officially won’t be getting an upgrade to Android 2.1. In happier news, the Backflip is slated for an update in the third quarter, and the Cliq and Cliq XT should see their updates in late Q3/early Q4.
There are a slew of other changes to Motorola’s roll-out chart, including the Milestone getting Froyo in the fourth quarter, so check it all out at the source link.
And to offer whatever consolation we can to you poor Devour owners, a present, after the break. [Motorola]

Motorola releases status update on Android 2.1 for CLIQ/CLIQ XT
It’s been officially stated that the Motorola CLIQ and CLIQ XT will definitely be receiving an Android 2.1 update, but now the question is: When? Well, folks, just hold your horses. Motorola jumped on Twitter this morning and released a statement:
For those asking for an update regarding a software upgrade on CLIQ in the U.S., we’ve made a decision to take more time on the release to optimize the experience in some key areas. We will continue to work to deliver it as soon as possible and apologize that we have been unable to provide an upgrade to these users in Q2 as planned.
We are working hard to provide an upgrade to Android 2.1 as soon as we can. Our consumers’ experience is our first priority and we will provide an upgrade when we can deliver the best possible user experience.
Basically, that’s Motorola saying that the update just isn’t ready yet, and they can’t tell you when it will be. Luckily, last week they opened mailing lists that will inform you when 2.1 has walked through the door. Until then, all we can do is be patient. [Motorola via Twitter]

Cliq and Backflip owners, Motorola has not forgotten you
Good news for Cliq, Cliq XT and Backflip users — Motorola has set up mailing lists for you to stay abreast of the news about your Eclair (Android 2.1) update. Again, Moto is using the phrase ‘when the 2.1 arrives’ and not if. You’ll need to be a member of the official Motorola forums (see source link for details), and you can sign up here:
Cliq update news ; Cliq XT update news ; Backflip update news
No dates are given (of course) and I’ll stress again that we have no idea when you’ll get your update. Head over and get signed up! [Motorola Owners' Forum] Thanks Jahntassa!

Motorola adds a bunch of phones to its Android 2.1 update list
Motorola just added a slew of new non-U.S. phones to its Android 2.1 update list (see the previous update), including a bunch of Backflips and Quenches. Doesn’t really give us a better idea of when the new software will actually be available, but it’s good to see Moto at least trying to be transparent about it. That said, it’d be great if we’d see some Android 2.2 update schedules popping up, m’kay? [Motorola] Thanks, Jake!

Cliq XT maintenance update being rolled out now
Looks like the maintenance update that was being tested on the Cliq XT is now being rolled out to everybody. It’s in two parts, so you’ll need to do both of them. The update brings you fixes to:
- Improves Overall Phone Performance
- Visual Voice Mail Enhancements
- Bluetooth Audio
- Camera Correction
- Screen/Display Performance
- Text Messaging Improvements
- Touch Screen Enhancement
And we’re reminded that, no, it’s not Android 2.1. Gonna have to wait a little longer for that. [T-Mobile]
Maintenance update being tested for Motorola Cliq XT
The Motorola Cliq XT (see our hands-on) has only been available for a month or so, and a maintenance update apparently already is on the way. Scheduled for improvement are:
- Improves Overall Phone Performance: Generally improves data connectivity while reducing the occurrence of freeze-ups, resets, and random forced quits.
- Visual Voice Mail Enhancements: Enhanced design and interaction for Visual Voice Mail.
- Bluetooth Audio Improvements to Bluetooth audio while streaming.
- Camera Correction: Addresses instances of camera randomly freezing after taking a picture, and helps correct intermittent resets while camera and video applications are in use.
- Screen/Display Performance: Improves backlight performance for the display.
- Text Messaging Improvements: General improvements to text messaging – especially for longer text message threads.
- Touch Screen Enhancement Improves overall sensitivity of the touch screen.
The update’s available for just 1,000 people right now, and we should see wider release shortly. [Motorola via TmoNews]
Where Motorola stands on Android 2.1 updates
Loyal reader Tom Cochrane reminded us on Twitter that Motorola has a status board for its Android 2.1 roll-out. And above is where we stand as of today. If you’re rocking the Milestone, updates are either in progress or should be coming in the few months or so. Same goes in the U.S. for the Backflip, Cliq and Cliq XT. Hang in there, folks. [Motorola] (And thanks, Tom.)
Motorola Cliq XT now available for $129, not $99 as first believed
T-Mobile has officially launched the Motorola Cliq XT. That’s the good news. The bad news is that contrary to what we previously were told by TMoToday, the Cliq XT will retail for $129 on new 2-year contract and not the previously rumored $99. The slight price bump isn’t ideal and leaves us a bit disappointed but hey, what can you do, carriers rarely "get" pricing like we would want them to. In any case, the Motorola Cliq XT is a full touchscreen device that runs Motoblur. And it’s pretty nice. [t-mobile]
