Dell Streak won’t be certified for T-Mobile, will get Android 2.2 later this year

Dell Streak (with Android 2.1)

First, the good: Dell has confirmed that its 5-inch Streak mini-tablet will get Android 2.2 later this year through an over-the-air update. It will, however, still launch with Android 1.6. It will be available in black at launch, and in cherry red later.

Now, the not so good: Despite previous reports, it won’t support T-Mobile’s 3G network. In fact, Dell says the Streak "will not be certified for T-Mobile operation overall." That’s not necessarily to say it won’t work on EDGE, it’s just that nobody will be responsible if you fry a few brain cells in the process.

Also, the presale window is still coming "this week." Accessories will be part of it, as will free next-day shipping and a 99-cent Plantronics Bluetooth headset. As soon as the presale goes live, we’ll let you know. Oh, and Dell’s made a video showing off the Streak, running Android 2.1, no less. Check it out after the break. [Dell] Thanks, wondercoolguy!

Dell Streak imminent, pre-sale window coming

Dell Streak

That rumored July 19 date for the Dell Streak has come and gone, but that doesn’t mean the 5-inch tablet-MID mashup isn’t imminent. On the contrary, Dell says it’s due in "late July," and it’s opening a 24-hour presale launch window with free second-day shipping and a Bluetooth headset for 99 cents to sweeten the deal. You’ll need to sign up to be notified. [Dell]

Dell Streak may hit AT&T ‘any day now’

Dell Streak

Dell Streak

The Samsung Captivate may not be the only major Android phone to hit AT&T this month. Engadget is speculating that the Dell Streak may hit stores "any day now." (Which is close to BGR’s rumored July 19 date.) The speculation comes from the fact that new kiosks are being installed by contractors in a very secret manner.

The Dell Streak is a 5-inch phone/tablet hybrid that has been overseas for a little while now. While it is being released disappointingly with Android 1.6, Dell has confirmed that 2.2 is in the "near future." [Engadget]

Qualcomm releases open-source 3D Snapdragon driver

qualcomm's snapdragon cpu

Qualcomm (the company that builds processors used in many Android phones) has released an open source 2D/3D Linux kernel driver for the OpenGL ES GPU core on the Snapdragon processor.  In non-geek language, this means that part of the code that runs the Adreno GPU on the Snapdragon is now open, and ready for Android developers to start hacking.  The user space portion hasn’t been released (soon Qualcomm?) so it’s not all wine and roses, but every little bit counts.  I’m certain that the Android development community will find this a valuable tool to squeeze more performance out of things, so this is great news for all of us rocking a Snapdragon powered phone — like the Incredible, Evo, or Nexus One.

Ubergeeks and kernel hackers can find the code in this Git tree.  Let the syncing and compiling begin! [Slashdot]

The Dell Streak shows off its bluetooth support in style

Dell Streak using a bluetooth mouse and keyboard

In another display of Android awesomeness, the Dell Streak shows off it’s skills by using a full size Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.  Not just any keyboard and mouse though, this time around we’re seeing it drive an Apple wireless keyboard and a Magic Mouse.  I’ll bet someone in Cupertino isn’t very happy about this, but here at Android Central we’re loving it.

Even better, it’s doing this out of the box — no hacking or wizardry needed.  Combine with the Streak’s 5-inch screen with a real keyboard and mouse and it looks like a tiny little desktop computer.  Should be awfully nice to reply to all your e-mail with this rig though.  Check out the rest of the pics and see a video in action after the break. Dell Streak rooted — now we just need them here

dell streak rooted

That was quick!  Paul over at MoDaCo announced that he has rooted the Dell Streak (aka the Dell Mini 5).  Seems like these new devices are getting cracked as fast as manufacturers can push them out.  Not a lot of details yet, but you can bet this is another thing we’re all keeping our eye on.  Thanks for the hard work Paul, now go have that beverage at your BBQ — you deserve it.  [MoDaCo]

Unlocked Dell Streak Android MID to be available in July

dell streak

If you’ve been itching to get your hands on the near indestructible Dell Streak (aka the Dell Mini 5) you’ll be happy to know that starting next month, it will be available directly through Dell’s own website. Since its being sold unlocked and unsubsidized, it takes a little sting out of the $500 price tag it carries. You’ll have the choice of being able to activate it over AT&T or T-Mobile’s networks, most likely, and you won’t be locked in to any 2-year contract. Even though our European friends are getting the Streak a little earlier than us (this Friday), fear not friends, we’re not too far off. [via Engadget]

Dell Streak’s screen has no problem taking a beating

The legendary (or is it mythical?) Dell Streak (Dell Mini 5) is finally almost here. However, what you might not have known is that its screen features the uber-resilient Gorilla Glass, which can take some ultra-heavy punishment. This 5-inch slate beauty is certainly a viable option for anybody who’s accident-prone, or anyone who wants to stab their screen frantically with sharp objects. The folks over at Engadget went with the latter, and from the looks of things, this MID’s only weakness might be kryptonite. [via Engadget]

Dell Streak coming to AT&T later this summer

We’ve heard that the Dell Streak, the sexy Android MID heretofore known as the Dell Mini 5, was headed to AT&T before. But haven’t heard official confirmation since. Until now that is. CEO Michael Dell showed off the Streak (again) at the Citrix Synergy conference and spilled the beans for us. To quote:

"[The Streak] will be available starting next month, first with our partner 02 Telefonica in Europe, then later this summer with our pretty good partner here in the United States, AT&T."

We’ve been really impressed with what we’ve seen in the Streak and hope that it can start a trend of awesome Android devices on AT&T. Remember, the Streak is expected to run Android 2.1 (will it be 2.2 by late summer?) and comes with a 5-inch screen, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 5-megapixel camera and your usual slew of connectivity options. We’d complain and wonder aloud why Europe is getting it first but hey, just getting a good Android device on AT&T is good enough. [eweek via Engadget]

Dell Mini 5 heading to T-Mobile, too

The Dell Mini 5 (formerly known, or is still known, as the Streak) just cleared the FCC and from the looks of it, is heading to T-Mobile. Wait, what? Didn’t we just say that the Mini 5 was packing AT&T 3G? Why, yes we did. So how is it heading to T-Mobile, too? Because Dell wants to own the Android MID/tablet space, apparently. And from the few times we’ve seen the Dell Mini 5 in action, they just might. Can we get an official launch date, now? [via engadget]
