Nikon D300s and D700 hitting stale status, make way for the next generation

There comes a time when you must clear out the old and make way for the new, and that’s exactly what Nikon has in store for its D300s and D700 shooters. According to Electronista , the Japanese camera giant added both of its aforementioned DSLRs to the “old products” section on its motherland site.

HP ‘officially’ out of TouchPads, Best Buy can still help you out

Looks like the tablet that wouldn’t die is finally dead — well, kind of sort, for now. HP sent out a note to let the world know that it’s “officially out of stock” of the zombie TouchPad. It’s not all bad news, however — apparently you can still pick one up at Best Buy, so long as you buy an HP computer at the same time. Mourn another quasi-death for the webOS slate with Boyz II Men after the break.

Zune is dead, long live Zune

Like Zune’s own Business Development Manager once said, all consumer electronics products have a lifespan, and today the (not so long) lineage of dedicated Zune hardware expires not with a roar, but with a promise to honor its warranties. Tucked away in the inner chambers of the Zune support site lies a page spelling out Microsoft’s final words on the device, “Windows Phone will be the focus of our mobile music and video strategy,” it says, “we will no longer be producing Zune players.” The Zune HD is survived by the Zune music service, which will continue to function with straggling standalone media players, as well as the Windows desktop, Windows Phone and Xbox platforms.

Sharp to discontinue original Galapagos e-readers, 7-inch species survives

We’re raising our glasses to the original Galapagos e-reader this morning, because Sharp has decided to discontinue it. Today, the manufacture announced that it will stop taking orders for its 5.5- and 10.8-inch Android tablets on September 30th, just nine months after they first launched. A company spokeswoman, however, confirmed that Sharp isn’t leaving the market altogether, as it plans to continue churning out the 7-inch A01SH that launched last month. The Japan-based firm is confident that “the market for electronic books will continue to expand,” but decided to terminate its older slates because they’ve already “fulfilled the purposes that they were designed for.” Sharp declined to disclose sales figures for the doomed devices, though local media outlets are reporting that they may have been squeezed out of the Japanese market by the iPad — a decidedly Darwinian explanation.

AT&T discontinues A-List feature for new customers, effective today

Nearly two years after AT&T introduced its A-List with Rollover plans to become more competitive against the likes of T-Mobile, Alltel and Verizon, the carrier has decided to nix the feature as of today. After receiving screenshots and a leaked memo detailing Ma Bell’s intent, we reached out to company reps, who confirmed to us that these plans are indeed going away. While new customers will no longer be able to benefit from having a pool of five or ten numbers (depending on the plan) to call as much as they want, anyone currently using the service will be grandfathered in. One more disclaimer: switching rate plans from individual to family (or vice versa) may wipe the A-List feature off, so proceed with caution. Head below to read AT&T’s official statement regarding the matter, as well as a few shots of the leaked memo.

[Thanks, Anonymous]

HP TouchPad tops Amazon US sales, rumored for UK price drop

Well, it’s official, the TouchPad is currently the hottest piece of consumer electronics around, and all it took was HP’s complete abandonment of its current line of webOS devices. The once maligned slate is currently atop Amazon’s electronics sales list. The 16GB and 32GB models have snagged the top two spots, beating out the Kindle, the iPod touch, and everyone else. And there may be some good news for UK customers who have been watching the excitement from afar — reports are rolling in that the tablet will available for £89 ($146) and £115 ($189) for the 16GB and 32GB versions. We’ll let you know when we get official confirmation on the matter.

Update: Looks like the above pricing has been confirmed for UK retailer, Dixons.

Microsoft shuts down utility monitoring service, proves you can’t go Hohm again

Is there anything more tragic than a broken Hohm? Microsoft announced this week that it will be shuttering its utility monitoring service at the close of May 2012, citing a lack of consumer adoption. The news comes a week after Google announced the closing of its competing PowerMeter service. Despite the shutdown, however, Microsoft assures us all that it’s still in the business of developing energy solutions for cities with a wide-ranging list of partners. Hohm itself will continue to operate through the end of May 2012, at which point its users will be rendered Hohmless.

T-Mobile G2 quietly discontinued, Z-Hinge’s future remains unclear

We’d had some indication that the T-Mobile G2 was nearing end of life status, and it looks like that inevitable milestone has already come to pass. According to TmoNews, the HTC-built device was officially discontinued by T-Mobile on June 6th, no doubt in an effort to make a bit a bit of room in the carrier’s QWERTY slider lineup for the likes of the MyTouch 4G Slide. Of course, existing G2 users do still have some good news to look forward to — namely, a Gingerbread upgrade that should breath a bit of new life into their crazy-hinged handset.
