Apple has yet to release any official numbers, but early returns on its new iBooks textbook store are looking pretty promising. According to Global Equities Research, more than 350,000 textbooks were downloaded within three days of the store’s debut , along with some 90,000 downloads of the iBooks Author platform.

At just under a year old, Apple’s Mac App Store is celebrating a fairly significant milestone, hitting the 100 million download mark, a fact the company celebrated with a customarily self-congratulatory press release. The desktop store hit the scene in January of this year , just ahead of CES — at present, it’s home to “thousands” of apps, according to Apple.

If you’re still trying to make the pieces of the recent ” Verizon is launching an over the top video service ” rumor fit, perhaps the missing element is information detailed by TechCrunch suggesting Big Red is the unnamed partner aligned with Redbox’s upcoming online video efforts . According to the rumor, the two would connect like Voltron, or, like Dish Network and Blockbuster — without the whole falling into ruin, bankruptcy and eventual purchase part of the story — for a subscription service offering movies for streaming and download to a variety of devices.

Originally spotted by the folks over at Phandroid , the clip shows a Verizon-branded Galaxy Nexus performing rather admirably on a speed trial from Speedtest.net, reaching download speeds of 8.5Mbps, and upstream rates of 2Mbps — all on just two bars of signal.

British Library digitizes 300 years worth of newspaper archives, brings 65 million articles online

Britain’s historical news junkies are in for a treat today, because the British Library has just digitized a major chunk of its newspaper archive, comprised of four million pages spanning some 300 years of headlines. With today’s launch of the British Newspaper Archive, users can search and browse through a staggering 65 million articles from a range of regional UK papers, encompassing the most newsworthy events from the past few centuries. Developed in coordination with online publisher Brightsolid, the archive also allows for remote article access and download, saving researchers a trip to the British Library’s newspaper depository in North London.
