Meizu MX to be Jack Wong’s next dream phone, coming with HDMI-out by year’s end (update: HSPA+)

It’s only been 109 days since Meizu’s remarkable launch of the M9 Android, but as we all know, there’s nothing stopping our man Jack Wong from teasing his next flagship phone on his forum. Previously known as the M9II, Wong has now renamed this 4-inch handset to MX — apparently short for “meng xiang” or “dream” in Mandarin Chinese, though X can also cunningly double up as the Roman numeral for 10 here. Also shared is the above real-life shot of an MX mock-up — not far off from the earlier render — which is appropriately seen chillaxing on the CEO’s bed. In a separate forum thread, we’re told that HDMI and coaxial digital audio outputs will be present on the MX, and a 16GB model will be released by the end of the year probably for ¥3,580 ($548). While this is a significant jump from the M9′s ¥2,699 ($413), Wong insists that both phones share the same profit margin, and frankly, this will still be a pretty good deal for some Cortex-A9 goodness under a larger screen. We’ll be right here waiting for you, Meizu; or we could just pop by your factory again some time.

Update: Jack Wong’s also confirmed HSPA+ support for some sweet 21Mbps download speed. The phone’s getting better by the minute!

CyanogenMod 6 (Froyo) status update

cyaongenmod

If you use a custom ROM on your Android phone, you should know about CyanogenMod.  If you don’t, go hit Google now, then come right back.  (pretty freakin’ sweet, huh?) With the drop of the Froyo (Android 2.2) source code everyone is patiently waiting for the code wizards behind the CyaongenMod project to give us the kind of custom goodness we’ve become used to.  To quell the mountain of inquiries, Cyanogen himself has updated the CyanogenMod homepage with a progress report.

The condensed version? Things are going well.  The Nexus One and Droid ports "just work," the Dream/Sapphire port has everything but one minor issue working, Wes Garner has the Slide (MyTouch 3G slide) port well underway, and ports for the Desire, Incredible, and Evo have no status report as of yet.  Also, we’re told to expect some experimental releases (for the Nexus One and Droid most likely) by the weekend.  (YAY!)  Hit the source link to read the post and take a minute to thank Steve and the whole crew for their hard work! Apple Inc. v. HTC: Day 2

Apple-HTC lawsuit

Woke up this morning. Checked the news. Yep, Apple’s still suing HTC. (Have a feeling a number of people in Bellevue, Wash., did the same.) Here’s a roundup of the latest in the patent battle launched by the iPhone-maker on the Taiwanese manufacturer of a large number of Android and Windows Mobile devices:

  • Google told the following statement to TechCrunch: “We are not a party to this lawsuit. However, we stand behind our Android operating system and the partners who have helped us to develop it.”
  • The New York Times’ Jonathan Adams writes that the patent fight, in the long run, "could strain its relations with partners in the crucial U.S. market and test its leadership, adding to its challenges in the increasingly competitive smartphone field."
  • ZDNet’s Matt Miller says "This latest lawsuit pushed me closer to NOT buying one [iPad] because I am getting a bit tired of Apple’s arrogance, even though I do really enjoy using some of their products.
  • Engadget EiC Josh Topolsky points out that HTC listed a job opening for a patent attorney back on Feb. 10.
  • PhoneDog’s Noah Kravitz: Blame the patent process.
  • Developer Wil Shipley chimes in with an open letter to Apple: "Enforcing patents isn’t a good long-term play: it’s the beginning of the end of the creative Apple we both love."
  • More analysis from Roughly Drafter’s Dan Dilger. It’s good. And very, very long.

No real news today, just plenty more reaction. And, really, the emotional reaction — whether it’s rooting against Apple or for HTC — has been a bit surprising. Makes you wonder if the response would be the same had Apple sued Motorola over its line of Android devices.

Rogers: HTC Magic to get Android 2.1 update, but the Dream will not

Rogers Magic and Dream

Good news and bad news for those of you on Rogers with either the HTC Dream or Magic. You’ve already been told you’re not getting an upgrade from Android 1.5, and that’s not changing. (That’s the bad news.)

The good news: Magic owners will see Android 2.1 later this year. As for Dream owners, well, you’ll be getting an exciting new update that’s still not anything other than Android 1.5. (OK, that’s bad news, too. Sorry, we tried.)

Here’s some of what Rogers had to say:

First, we will be implementing an update for the 1.5 OS to both the HTC Dream and HTC Magic in the upcoming weeks. These will offer a number of benefits for these devices, including bringing the HTC Sense experience to the HTC Magic, although the OS version will remain 1.5.

By mid-year, HTC will issue an upgrade to Android 2.1, including the highly acclaimed HTC Sense experience for the HTC Magic.

However, due to certain limitations on the HTC Dream, the software path for the HTC Dream will not be developed beyond the next Android 1.5 update. While we regret not being able to offer the same updates to both devices, by bringing this upgrade to the HTC Magic, we are delivering the best solution possible given the situation at hand.

We know that’s not going to make you folks feel any better, but some update is better than no update, we guess. Complete statement after the break.

Android 2.1 Ported To T-Mobile G1 ?

Rumor alert! Rumor alert! Looks like an Android user has ported Android 2.1 to the device nearest and dearest to our hearts, the T-Mobile G1. Now we don’t doubt that the T-Mobile G1, easily the most customizable Android device available, can get the 2.1 update but our impatience just wants us to see it for real, for real. Video will do but downloadable form is even better.

Since we’ve already seen the T-Mobile G1 rock Android 2.0 on video, having Android 2.1 ported onto it isn’t that much of a stretch. Word was the T-Mobile G1 was actually supposed to receive the official 2.x update but word is quite quiet around the Google/T-Mobile/Android side of things, guess they’re all focused on bigger and better things..
