Verizon starts delivering long overdue Froyo update to Fascinate users

Rejoice, brothers and sisters, for the Froyo has been delivered! Verizon’s Fascinate was up until today weirdly stuck in its Android 2.1 gear, but the carrier has finally figured out whatever needed figuring out and is currently beaming out an Android 2.2 update over the air to expectant users. Now that we’ve put this long wait behind us, can we maybe jump to 2.3 in a slightly more sprightly fashion, Verizon?

[Thanks, Jason]

Samsung Fascinate Froyo leak reportedly in the hands of a few lucky devs

Samsung Fascinate Froyo Leak

Normally we wouldn’t post such a tease, since there’s no payoff at the end of this rainbow. But when we’re able to use the words "Samsung," "Fascinate" and "Froyo" in the same sentence, we’re going to do it, dammit. An official Android 2.2 build for the Samsung Fascinate apparently has slipped into the hands of some devs who can do some good with it. And now the race is on — will we see an official release first, or one from the community? News at 11, folks. [Twitter via Android Central Forums]

Samsung acknowledges problem with emergency dialer after DL09 update

Samsung lock screen

Samsung just got back with us regarding a fairly serious bug some people are seeing after the recent DL09 over-the-air update for the Verizon Fascinate. Namely, some of you can place an emergency call if you’re using the pattern lock feature. The sky’s not falling, but it is a potentially serious bug. Here’s Samsung’s response:

It has come to the attention of Samsung Mobile during the recent DL09 OTA (Over-the-Air) update for the Samsung Fascinate that some users utilizing the Pattern Lock are finding that the Emergency Call shortcut is not automatically launching the dialer. However, unlocking the device will allow the user to make calls as they normally would, including emergency calls. We apologize for the inconvenience and are continuing to evaluate the issue, including if the issue is linked to the update.

Kudos to Samsung for looking into it. For now, we continue to recommend that you not use the pattern lock feature if you’ve upgraded to DL09.

Samsung responds: ‘Not charging carriers for Froyo updates’

Samsung

The number of anonymous and unconfirmed "reasons" for the amount of time it’s taking the U.S. Galaxy S phones to get their upgrades to Android 2.2 seems to grow every day. And the leading theory thus far has been from a post at XDA that claims Samsung is charging carriers more for the upgrade than they’re willing to pay. (There’s also that crackpot tip that Samsung was holding Froyo "hostage" as to not cannibalize sales of the unannounced Vibrant 4G. Yes, we’ve seen them all.)

But tonight, Samsung responded to Phonescoop, saying unequivocally:

"No. Samsung is not charging carriers for Froyo updates to Galaxy S. We hope to have more detail on status shortly. Promise!"

So it’s time to put the tinfoil hats back on and bombard our inboxes once again with the latest unsourced, anonymous theory. But we’ll throw this out and see if it floats: Perhaps it’s just taken Samsung and the U.S. carriers that long to get their ducks in a row to make sure everything works, and everybody will shut up and smile once the updates hit, and start bitching about Gingerbread instead.  [Phonescoop]

DL09 update for the Samsung Fascinate brings a mounting headache for many

V-Cast manager

Last week Verizon pushed the Froyo DL09 update to innocent Samsung Fascinates all across the U.S. The good news is DL09 fixed a major bug related to standalone GPS lock times.

The bad news is DL09 also introduced a major headache for users who want to mount the Fascinate’s SD card as a mass storage device.

This feature is standard on all Android phones and is used to transfer files back and forth between a computer and SD card. Media sync programs, such as iSyncr and Handbrake, also require SD card mounting in order to synchronize files. For Mac users, SD card mounting no longer works with the DL09 update, nor is there a workaround.

PC users are expected to download and install the 113MB V CAST Media Manager application, install specific drivers via a program called ToolLauncher-Bootstap.exe, and follow several other dizzying steps before the SD card mounting feature will work again. These important details weren’t listed on Verizon’s support site as part of the update, nor do they provide instructions on how to get all of this working. We basically had to stumble and guess our way through it before we finally figured it out.

The average consumer would probably give up in frustration (I know I almost did). Even more bizarre is the fact that the Fascinate shows up as Galaxy S tablet in the V CAST Media Manager application.

PC users can get step-by-step instructions in post #60 of this thread.

Mac users (that’s me!) keep an eye on this thread.

Fascinate’s DL09 update rolling out in earnest – how’s it going for you?

Verizon Fascinate update

We’re now more than a week into Verizon pushing out the DL09 update to the Samsung Fascinate, so it’s time to check in. How’s everybody doing? Just peachy? Great. If you’ve missed it, there’s some great discussion going on in the forums about the update. As well as the "Where the hell is Froyo?" thread. And then there’s that (bad) rumor that Froyo’s never coming. Anyhoo, more than enough Thursday morning fodder for your Fascinate folks. Cheers!

Samsung Fascinate MR update released

Samsung Fascinate update

Verizon has released the scheduled maintenance release update for the Samsung Fascinate, and it’s not Froyo.  Prepare your rotten tomatoes and pitchforks, because yes, I did say it could be Froyo a few days back when we got tipped about the update.  Unfortunately, it’s just the DL09 update that many said wouldn’t pass Verizon’s quality control.  Looks like it did :)

The good news is that it supposedly fixes the GPS (though many say differently) and offers a slew of other bug fixes and enhancements, and updates all those apps everyone wants to uninstall.  For more info and instructions, hit the source link. [Verizon via Android Central forumsThanks everyone who sent this in!

Want to discuss the good and bad about the update?  Check out the Fascinate forums while I slink off and hide my head in shame.

Froyo for the Samsung Fascinate coming Jan 10; Continuum Jan 18?

Verizon Confidential

According to a tipster (we love tipsters, and their pictures!) Verizon is preparing for a software release for the Samsung Fascinate on Jan 10, and one for the Continuum on Jan 18.  While we can’t say for sure this means Froyo, we’ve heard nothing about any maintenance releases for either phone, so it looks like a good bet you’ll soon be seeing Android 2.2 on your Verizon Galaxy S phones.  We’ll keep our eyes and ears open, and let you guys know more if it develops. Verizon still expecting to get Froyo on the Fascinate by 2011?

Fascinate with Froyo

Not to get anybody’s hopes up, but if this internal specs comparison is to believed, Verizon plans for Adobe Flash to be available on the Samsung Fascinate by the end of 2010. And to have Flash, you need Froyo, of course. So we’ve got a week to go. It’s certainly possible, but we’re not holding our breath just yet. And note that the Droid X is listed here as having Android 2.1 — it was updated to Android 2.2 in late September — so this could be out of date. But we’ll keep our fingers crossed in the coming week, just in case.

Review: Mobi Products skin case for the Samsung Fascinate and Mesmerize

Mobi products skin case

The Mobi Products skin case is a single-piece, wraparound case for the Samsung Fascinate and Mesmerize. The case material is a flexible rubber with a grippy matte surface. The phone easily slides in and out, which is a benefit for those who swap batteries frequently. On the other hand, the top parameter might be a little too flexible and loose for others.

I’m somewhere in the middle. I fall into the category of those who do not typically use a case. However, I found myself using it more often than not, because of the ability to pop it on and off with ease. Perfectly aligned cutouts provide sufficient access to the buttons, speaker, camera, microphone, headset jack, and micro SD slot. The material was fingerprint-free after extended use and was easy to clean with a drop of dish soap and water. The volume rocker and power buttons are easy to push. If you’re a person, who on average, prefers the feel of a naked phone but wants some level of protection while your phone is in a coat pocket or lying on a table, this could be the perfect case for your needs.  Grab the Mobi Products skin case in one of four different colors from the Android Central store for $9.95.  Hit the break for some more pictures.
