Google Testing Mystery Entertainment System

Google has filed an application with the FCC for a 6-month permission to test a home entertainment system involving WiFi and Bluetooth enabled devices. While I don’t quite understand all the legal-speak, it seems quite clear that the system has to do with Android@Home, which was announced at Google I/O 2011 . You can find the application  here . Please explain in the area below why an STA is necessary:  Google is developing an entertainment device that requires testing outside the laboratory environment

You know the saying, second place is the first loser? Well, it looks like AT&T, which recently saw its attempt to absorb T-Mobile thwarted , is living up to that adage by petitioning the FCC to impose an “overly aggressive buildout” of Dish’s planned mobile network .

Verizon’s ZTE Jetpack flies through FCC, arrival time still unknown

Do you wish you had your own personal Jetpack? Well, you may not have to wait much longer for ZTE’s version — the EuFi I890, announced at CES last month — to come out, if its entry into the records of the FCC are any indication. It may not be the kind that you strap onto your back, but at least this one takes advantage of Verizon’s LTE , and it happens to add in CDMA / EVDO and AT&T-compatible 3G radios.

Comcast’s Internet Essentials program expanding as digital literacy project soars

If everyone needs the internet, then poor kids need it more — since so much learning material is dependent on technology. Comcast teamed up with the FCC to produce Internet Essentials : a $10 a month broadband plan and $150 computers to get the nation’s poorest families online. Six months later, the program’s been a colossal success, leading to the company adding some sweeteners: eligibility is being relaxed to include any family who qualifies for discounted lunches (swelling the catchment group by a further 300,000)

FCC revamps Lifeline phone service, cuts the fat from carriers’ bottomlines

With a site redesign freshly under its belt, the FCC’s setting its recently honed eye for modernization on other, more pertinent areas of its jurisdiction — like Lifeline. The universal program, a means of guaranteeing affordable phone service to low-income families, hadn’t exactly kept pace with changes in the telecom industry, overlooking consumers’ preference for wireless and the growing need for pervasive broadband access.

Sprint grants LightSquared six-week extension for FCC approval

As Carl Icahn prepares to take the wheel , buttressed by a cushion of distressed LightSquared debt, Sprint appears close to ending its ill-fated dance with the upstart LTE provider. After granting the Falcone-backed company a 30-day extension earlier this January, the Hesse-led co is taking one last stab at making that 15-year resource sharing agreement work, giving the beleaguered network an additional six weeks to garner regulatory approval for its controversial spectrum. As it stands, the fate of LS’ wholesale 4G operation lies within the FCC’s hands and with no hard date for a final ruling in sight, it’s easy to read this last lifeline as the end
