Some Lenovo ThinkPad X220 owners report downthrottling, reduced performance

No matter how much time we spend with a laptop while we review it, there are some things that are just harder to gauge — namely, what happens once you’ve owned the thing for a while and the Sandy Bridge-fueled honeymoon comes to an end. That couldn’t be more true of the Lenovo ThinkPad X220, one of our favorite ultraportables at the moment. We’re seeing assorted reports from folks whose machines keep downthrottling to 800MHz, even when they’re plugged in, set to the maximum performance profile, and not overheating. The result, they say, is slower HDD and SDD performance and reduced random read / write speeds, among other pernicious side effects. Worse, the only reliable solution so far seems to be shutting down the system and performing a cold boot. (For some — but not all — disabling Intel Speedstep and / or CPU Power Management in the BIOS works, too.) Judging by the threads in Lenovo’s user forum, the company is definitely aware of the problem, though it’s unclear if it’s found a fix yet. We’ve pinged Lenovo for comment and will let you know what we hear. In the meantime, how’s your X220 treating you?

An Android challenge to close out 2010

So long 2010

December’s here. Just one more month until this year wraps up and the next one begins. And when you stop and think about it, what a year it’s been. Started with the launch of Android 2.1 on the Nexus One and is ending with … Well, we don’t quite know, do we? Gingerbread’s coming. And, eventually, Honeycomb. We know of a smattering of new hardware waiting in the wings. Dual-core. More tablets. It’s gonna be busy, to say the least. And over the next few weeks, we’ll be taking a look back at some of the highs and lows of 2010.

But let’s end the year on a high note, shall we? A bit of a challenge, perhaps. Three things you can do to help cap a stellar year for Android Central:

  • Help us hit 50,000 followers on Twitter: It’s an ambitious goal, but we’re almost there already. Just a few more thousand, and we’ve got it. And once we hit it, we’ll have a giveaway to celebrate. As in free stuff. Follow @androidcentral.
  • Join us in the Android Central Forums: Hundreds of your fellow Android fans are joining every day. New to Android? We’ve got the friendliest forums around. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. We’re here to help. Register for the forums now.
  • Find us on Facebook: Look, we know you already spend half your day on Facebook. Your boss knows, too. Might as well be a bit more useful and hang out with use while you’re doing it. facebook.com/androidcentral.

Tell your friends. Tell your neighbors. ‘Cause it’s on in 2011.

Gingerbread: What’s the holdup? [from the forums]

Android 2.3 GingerbreadAndroid Central Forums member Hearthatvoiceagain asks the question that’s on everybody’s mind: Where is Gingerbread? Google CEO Eric Schmidt said Android 2.3 is coming in the next few weeks, but it’s been a month since the Gingerbread statue was dropped off at the Google Campus, and still we have no announcement. And that’s a break from tradition — Cupcake, Donut and Froyo were announced within a couple of week of their statues’ unveiling.

So what’s the holdup? Is Gingerbread just not ready? Is that rumored delay of the Nexus S true, and so we have to wait for Gingerbread? Or maybe everything is going according to Google’s plan?

And will Google unveil Gingerbread during a holiday week?

Join in on the discussion and let us know what you think.

What’s holding up Android 2.3. Gingerbread?

Sprint LG Optimus S unboxed, rooted

 LG Optimus S Unboxing

Before the Internet and YouTube, nobody had any interest in watching someone else open boxes.  Now, it’s practically a rite of passage.

Our very own KSmithInNY scored the Sprint version of LG’s Optimus line, the Optimus S, two days ahead of launch.  He was kind enough to post his initial thoughts and some unboxing photos on our forums.

But this is Android Central. Anyone can nab an early handset and snap some pictures; our readers root them the same day.  Kevin rooted his Optimus S and created an excellent guide for everyone looking to pick one of these up on Sunday.

If you’re interested in reading about the newest member of Sprint’s Android family, head on over to our Optimus S Forums and check out his impressions. (Thanks Kevin!)  [Android Central Forums]
