HTC Magic / T-Mobile G1 gets Honeycomb port, Android past and future fused together (video)

The original gangster of Android, T-Mobile’s G1, just refuses to quietly fade into the annals of history. Even in spite of its long overdue end of retail life last summer, the handset continues to see support from grassroots modders and tweakers, with the latest project being the most ambitious of them all: an Android Honeycomb port. A pair of xda members have succeeded in splicing Android’s most senior hardware with its very latest software and the results are available to see on video after the break. As usual with these builds, half of the phone’s functions have still to be enabled and the UI lag seems like it’ll be a permanent feature whatever happens, but still — it’s Honeycomb on the G1!

G1 – tonight we bid you a sad farewell

g1farewell

The G1. The founding father of Android as we know it today has finally been removed from the T-Mobile website. This device has had quite a run since its launch in the fall of 2008, and we have seen a lot more happen for this device then we ever thought imaginable. The original Android device, the one running "only" a 528MHz processor, may have not been anywhere near the top in comparison to other device specs, but this will be a device that no one will ever forget. From the protoype demo by Andy Rubin to the leaked specs to the long awaited release the device will surely never be forgotten, heck it even landed itself a 2.1 based ROM for all the faithful users. Now, let’s all take a minute to remember our fallen soldier. Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

CyanogenRom 5.0.7 brings Android 2.1 for the G1, myTouch 3G

Development for Android continues, even if unofficially, and it seems as though just about every day we see something new surface. HTC G1 owners sometimes feel as though they are on the back burner, as their device was the original, and at this point it is slightly behind the times in some categories. But that doesn’t stop Cyanogen from developing great custom ROMs. And 5.0.7 is the latest and greatest of all the Cyanogen builds for older phones, and it’s now available for download. (And above, Cyanogen crony Kmobs shows off some of the finer points.) We’re still waiting on the build to actually be released, but it should be any time now. Keep your eyes peeled here.

T-Mobile G1 users seeing OTA update, but it’s not Android 2.x

T-Mobile G1

We’re getting word that T-Mobile G1 users have been getting OTA updates over the past couple of days, but alas it’s not "THE BIG ONE" to Android 2.0 or 2.1. Instead, it looks like it’s a radio update, aka the infamous "call quality improvement."

Be sure to post your findings in the forums and check out what others are seeing. [T-Mobile forums]

T-Mobile gradually pushing out maintenance update for the G1

T-Mobile G1 update

Nope, Android fans, the T-Mobile G1 isn’t getting the almighty Android 2.1 update (or 2.0 for that matter) just yet. Instead, you can look forward to one of those lovely "maintenance updates." This one, dubbed DMD64, promises to improve call performance. So if you’re the type who loves radio updates (and who doesn’t, really), make sure you have the required Android data plan, sit back and wait for it to roll in. [via TMoNews]

Android 2.1 Ported To T-Mobile G1 ?

Rumor alert! Rumor alert! Looks like an Android user has ported Android 2.1 to the device nearest and dearest to our hearts, the T-Mobile G1. Now we don’t doubt that the T-Mobile G1, easily the most customizable Android device available, can get the 2.1 update but our impatience just wants us to see it for real, for real. Video will do but downloadable form is even better.

Since we’ve already seen the T-Mobile G1 rock Android 2.0 on video, having Android 2.1 ported onto it isn’t that much of a stretch. Word was the T-Mobile G1 was actually supposed to receive the official 2.x update but word is quite quiet around the Google/T-Mobile/Android side of things, guess they’re all focused on bigger and better things..
