Bluegrass Cellular gets Samsung Gem for a mere $59 on contract

Samsung Gem on Bluegrass Cellular

Been wondering where the Samsung Gem is headed? Wonder no more, as it’s appeared on regional carrier Bluegrass Cellular for the low, low price of $59 on contract. But for our money, we’d just buy this sucker at its outright price of $205 and skip the mess of contracts. That said, you’re getting an entry-level Android phone, with Android 2.1, a 3.2MP camera and 3.2-inch touchscreen, all powered by an 800MHz processor. So it’ll get the job done, but likely not win any awards doing it. One more pic after the break. [BluegrassThanks, @ibegary!

Samsung Gem appears once again, this time on the Samsung website

We’ve had a few run ins with the Samsung Gem in the past. Looking destined for Verizon, then outted by Best Buy, which was later retracted. This time around though, Samsung is giving the little guy all the love by having posted the SCH-i100 Gem right up on their website. Of course, in doing so they also laid out all the specs for those who somehow might still be interested in this device.

  • Android 2.1
  • 3.2MP Camera
  • 800MHz processor
  • 850/1900MHz CDMA
  • GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • 3.2-inch touch display with WQVGA resolution

Also included is the Swype keyboard technology and Samsungs Social hub is baked right in. Neither availability dates or any carriers are associated to the device. It just appears that Samsung wanted to add yet another device to their website even if it never ends up on a carrier. [Samsung via PhoneScoop]

Best Buy backs off the Samsung Gem

Verizon Samsung Gem Best Buy

Whoopsie. Looks like when Best Buy showed off the Verizon Samsung Gem in its buyer’s guide, it did so a little prematurely. It’s unknown whether the correction you see above means the phone’s not happening, or if it’s just postponed. Stay tuned, folks. Thanks, bxojr.

Best Buy guide shows off Samsung Gem

Samsung Gem

We first http://www.androidcentral.com/samsung-gem-shows-its-face-verizon-brandingwww.androidcentral.com/samsung-gem-shows-its-face-verizon-branding, and it has now shown up in the Best Buy buyer’s guide.

The Gem is going to be another offering from Samsung on Verizon, but aimed at the low-end spectrum. Most likely the crowd that is transitioning from feature phones to smart-phones but doesn’t want to spring for expensive devices just yet.

Here are the specs for the Gem:

  • Android 2.1 (Eclair)
  • TouchWiz 3.0
  • Swype
  • 3.2 MP camera
  • 16 GB Micro-SD expansion

The Gem is being overshadowed by Samsung and Verizon’s big release of the Fascinate on Sept. 9. They are aimed at different crowds though, and it just means that Android will continue to grow, which is a good thing. [Engadget]
