Android Developers ready to hangout on Google+

The mobile ninjas over at Android Developers have announced a new medium for advice, collaboration and training : Google+ . The collective will use the social networking site to help developers “meet, share, and connect with the people behind the Android developer experience.” Programming tips, SDK announcements and training offerings are all on the menu, and the group is promising to hold weekly “broadcast office hours” for live Q&A using the Hangouts feature built-in to Google+. Barack Obama is no stranger to social networks, but Google+ is still relatively new territory for him (and everyone else for that matter). The president doesn’t seem afraid of mixing it up with the online riffraff, though, and will be hosting his very first Hangout tonight at 5:30pm ET. He’ll be answering questions submitted via YouTube and selected by Google based on viewer rating

The world’s teenage population can pontificate from a new digital platform, now that Google+ has decided to open its doors to high schoolers. Google+ VP Bradley Horowitz made the announcement yesterday, confirming that anyone old enough to own a Google account can now join the social network

President Obama may have been on Google+ since November, but the administration is now stepping up its presence on the social network even further in anticipation of next week’s State of the Union address and the forthcoming presidential campaign. It now has an official White House Google+ page, where it plans to post the usual news, photos and videos, and also host regular Hangout video chats. There’s no promises yet that the President himself will take part, but the White House says it will regularly have administration officials and policy experts take part in the conversations, which will also be streamed on YouTube and WhiteHouse.gov

If Google’s idea of a stocking stuffer is tweaking Google+, its engineers are getting the gift-giving over with a few days early. Today, the company announced that it’ll be introducing a few new features to its social network, including new controls that adjust how posts from a given circle are blended into the overall stream of posts, along with which posts are highlighted for your attention. The outfit also says it’s working on refining its toolbar to highlight newer posts and see how widely your posts have been shared

Google’s Hangout feature has just become a little more Hangout-y, now that the folks in Mountain View have integrated free voice calls within Google+. Available to users within the US and Canada, this new “extra” feature allows social networkers to place calls directly from a Hangout, allowing the recipient to remotely join in on the conversation at hand

Falling into lockstep with Google’s quest to redesign everything , YouTube officially unveiled a radical new look for its twenty billion strong video site. Now sporting a more somber look, the homepage is now dominated by a center feed hosting content, which is flanked on its left by a list of channels in a quasi-navigation bar.

We hope you’re enjoying that new Gmail and Reader interface, because Google isn’t done repainting every nook and cranny just yet. The next bit to get a facelift is the Google Bar. The thin dark gray strip of text is going away, and in its place is a new persistent UI element that combines search and Google+ tools, including a share button and notifications
