HTC acknowledges long-running WiFi security flaw, says it kept it quiet to prevent exploits

As far back as September, security researchers discovered a “critical” bug in many HTC Android handsets that exposed users’ WiFi credentials to any hacker who cared to look. The flaw affected recent devices like the Thunderbolt and EVO 4G all the way back to the Desire HD . The researchers promptly notified HTC, but the manufacturer waited a full five months before acknowledging the flaw publicly a few days ago

HTC Sensation puts on a white coat to match its Ice Cream Sandwich innards (updated)

You may have already moved on to more Amaze -ing HTC phones , but there’s nothing like a new coat of paint to rekindle consumer interest in its older, less Sensation al offerings. And so, the handset that ushered in Sense 3.0 and its signature lockscreen is getting a visual refresh and a belly full of Google’s latest mobile OS, just not at the same time.

Sprint issues HTC EVO Shift 4G software update to version 2.77.651.3

As of today a new software update is available for Sprint’s HTC EVO Shift 4G . The update to version 2.77.651.3 deals with a few bug fixes and software tweaks, including security enhancements, a new version of the Peep client for Twitter, and improved battery life. The software update can be initiated manually starting today, otherwise users will start receiving update notifications beginning February 7th.

Europe to receive white HTC Sensation with Ice Cream Sandwich March 1st

A new version of the HTC Sensation is on tap for a European release, and it may be one of the first handsets from the manufacturer to feature Ice Cream Sandwich. A press release out of HTC’s Dutch branch is announcing a new white version of the Sensation for sale on March 1st throughout Europe with a key new feature being the inclusion of Android 4.0 out of the box. Perhaps even more exciting is the possibility that an ICS build will be ready for deployment to existing Sensation handsets around the same time.

Bug gives access to WiFi passwords on certain HTC handsets

HTC has had its fair share of security problems over the past few months, and the manufacturer is coming clean about yet another potential data leak . Certain HTC phones contain a bug that allows third-party apps with android.permission.ACCESS_WIFI_STATE enabled can gain easy access to a users WiFi network info, including password. The exploit was discovered back in September, but the folks who discovered it haven’t gone public with their info until today. HTC is brushing the issue, which affects handsets from the Desire HD and Droid Incredible to the Sensation and EVO 3D, off as a minor one
