Select AT&T Android devices may get app sideloading as early as today

It’s a classic romantic tale of “network meets OS, network disables OS,” and just like any love story, this one is building up to a happy ending. Fourteen months after AT&T introduced a lineup of crippled Android phones that weren’t allowed to install third-party apps, the carrier extended an olive branch to fans of the OS by quietly slipping the sideloading capability onto the Samsung Infuse 4G; now, the network is reportedly updating three members of its Android lineup — the HTC Inspire 4G, HTC Aria, and Samsung Captivate — sometime today. We’re sure there were many Atrix users scanning this short list with fingers crossed, but unfortunately your phone did not make the cut this time. No word on why your favs were left out, but at least four devices with Amazon Appstore access is still better than zero. At present time we haven’t seen the updates get pushed to our phones, however, so we’d love to hear if any of you have seen differently down in comments below.

AT&T Issuing Updates to Select Android Phones to Enable Sideloading

This image has no alt text

It’s time. Time for AT&T to give you a bit more freedom over your Android smartphone, that is. It’s been leaked that they’ll begin issuing updates to select Android handsets – including the HTC Aria and Inspire 4G and the Samsung Captivate – that’ll allow users to sideload applications. (IE, install applications from sources outside of the Android market.)

We knew of their plans back when the Amazon Appstore launched. AT&T had a page specifically for the incompatibility and assured everyone that updates would allow users to take advantage of Amazon’s Appstore in the near future.

They didn’t hint toward what solution they’d be going for at that time. (Some speculated they were working with Amazon to customize the Appstore to install applications without using Android’s native .APK installer. We’re glad they just chose to open the phones up, though. I

t’s worthy to note that the newly-released Samsung Infuse 4G already has this functionality. And oddly enough, Motorola’s stable of phone – including the dual-core ATRIX 4G – are missing from the equation. Let’s hope that changes sometime soon. [AC]

HTC Outs Source Code for Desire Z, Desire HD, myTouch 4G and Aria

This image has no alt text

Source code, get your source code here. HTC has dropped quite a few new sources upon their online developer center covering a handful of handsets released in the latter half of 2010 (and two featuring the updated version of HTC Sense). Fresh for your perusal are the source codes of the HTC Desire Z Desire HD, Aria, and T-Mobile-branded myTouch 4G. For those working in custom ROMs or the hacking community, this should offer plenty of new material to riff off of.

Telenav updates Android version to 6.2, available on AT&T today

Telenav 2.2

Telenav, makers of popular cross platform turn-by-turn navigation software, has updated their Android application to version 6.2.  Many improvements come along for the ride, including improved responsiveness, 22 million new points of interest (all searchable inside the app), a new quick search bar, better voice recognition, and new multiple route suggestions.

While we applaud Google for excellent turn-by-turn navigation via Google Maps, ask anyone who uses Telenav and they will likely tell you they love it.  It’s a very well written and great performing application, and today’s improvements should only make it better.  Especially interesting is the multi-route suggestion — enter your destination and Telenav will tell you up to three different routes to reach it.  As Todd Witkemper of Telenav reminds us in their video demonstration (after the break!), there will always be certain roads you don’t like to travel, so having a choice of route from the beginning is a very nice touch.  And choice?  I’m always for more of it.

Telenav 6.2 is available today as an Android Market update for the Samsung Captivate, the HTC Aria, and the Motorola Backflip, branded as AT&T Navigator 2.2.  Telenav also tells us that Android devices on other carriers will soon be able to upgrade their version as well.  Follow the break for the full press release, a series of pictures of the new UI,  and a video from Telenav showing off the cool new features.

HTC Aria sees Android 2.2 update — in Southeast Asia that is

HTC Aria

The HTC Aria has had a bit of a rough life on AT&T and it doesn’t seem to be getting any better yet despite HTC now rolling out an official Android 2.2 for it in South East Asia. No sign of when (or if) AT&T plans on allowing HTC to roll it out for those of you making use of the device on AT&T but you could always hit up the leaked Sense 2.2 ROM. [Engadget via HTC]

HTC reports record fourth quarter with $3.3 billion in sales

 HTC

HTC has perhaps been the single largest OEM supporter of Android since Google launched the OS. Remember, the G1, Hero, Nexus 1, Droid Incredible, Desire, and Evo 4G (and many, many more phones) were all made by the Taiwanese company and were largely considered the best Android phones on the market when each launched. The company just released their numbers for Q4 and to say they are impressive is an understatement. The company raked in north of $3.3 billion in sales, units shipped doubled year-over-year to 9 million, and total units shipped doubled from last year to 24.5 million. The places the company in close competition with Samsung as the fourth-largest global smartphone manufacturer behind Nokia, RIM, and Apple.

HTC has attributed most of this growth to the exploding demand for Android smartphones, and expects this trend to continue. HTC plans to cover their bases by strongly supporting Windows Phone 7 as well. The HD 7, in particular, looks like a great device for WP7 users as it is more or less an Evo sans Android.
