If you went ahead and tried out any of the CyanogenMod 7 nightly builds, you’ve surely noticed the new Gapps builds.  This is something that the fellows on the CM team has been working on as well, and it’s a pretty big change from what everyone is used to.

Whenever things change, we try to get on top of it all and keep you guys informed.  Hit the break for the skinny, and if this is all old-hat to you, jump in the forums and help those who need it! [CyanogenMod Forums]

Android plays big in T-Mobile’s net neutrality arguments

T-Mobile's G1

Net neutrality is more than just one of the current industry buzzwords, and according to T-Mobile, Android is smack dab in the middle of it all.  After reading a great article over at Fierce Wireless, I got to thinking about just how the outcome of the whole net neutrality issue can and will affect Android as a platform.  Hit the break to see my thoughts on the whole issue — as well as an interesting tale about how some badly coded app nearly took down T-Mo’s network. Mixed bag for T-Mobile’s Q2 numbers

T-Mobile

A T-Mobile released its second-quarter earnings report today. Check out these numbers:

  • Revenue is up to $4.7 billion this quarter, and increase from $4.63 billion in Q1, but a decrease from Q2 2009′s $4.77 billion
  • 6.5 million users have 3G phones, up 25% from Q1 2010
  • T-Mobile’s HSPA+ service covers 85 million Americans with 4G-like speeds
  • There was a decline of 93,000 in the number of total subscribers, compared to a gain of 325,000 in Q2 2009
  • Total customer numbers now stand at 33.6 million
  • About 200,000 prepaid customers were lost in Q2, while just over 100,000 contract customers were added

So, a mix of good and bad for America’s No. 4 wireless provider. As contract customers have (on average) higher monthly bills, the net loss of those prepaid customers isn’t quite so bad. Also, these numbers don’t reflect the launch of the Samsung Vibrant, which by all indications has sold quite well for T-Mobile. Plus, TMO is supposed to be announcing their first fully HSPA+ compliant device soon and a rumored dual-core Snapdragon phone might be coming, both of which should give them something to brag about.  Full presser after the break.

G1 – tonight we bid you a sad farewell

g1farewell

The G1. The founding father of Android as we know it today has finally been removed from the T-Mobile website. This device has had quite a run since its launch in the fall of 2008, and we have seen a lot more happen for this device then we ever thought imaginable. The original Android device, the one running "only" a 528MHz processor, may have not been anywhere near the top in comparison to other device specs, but this will be a device that no one will ever forget. From the protoype demo by Andy Rubin to the leaked specs to the long awaited release the device will surely never be forgotten, heck it even landed itself a 2.1 based ROM for all the faithful users. Now, let’s all take a minute to remember our fallen soldier. Thanks to everyone who sent this in.

CyanogenMod 6 (Froyo) status update

cyaongenmod

If you use a custom ROM on your Android phone, you should know about CyanogenMod.  If you don’t, go hit Google now, then come right back.  (pretty freakin’ sweet, huh?) With the drop of the Froyo (Android 2.2) source code everyone is patiently waiting for the code wizards behind the CyaongenMod project to give us the kind of custom goodness we’ve become used to.  To quell the mountain of inquiries, Cyanogen himself has updated the CyanogenMod homepage with a progress report.

The condensed version? Things are going well.  The Nexus One and Droid ports "just work," the Dream/Sapphire port has everything but one minor issue working, Wes Garner has the Slide (MyTouch 3G slide) port well underway, and ports for the Desire, Incredible, and Evo have no status report as of yet.  Also, we’re told to expect some experimental releases (for the Nexus One and Droid most likely) by the weekend.  (YAY!)  Hit the source link to read the post and take a minute to thank Steve and the whole crew for their hard work! T-Mobile G1 users seeing OTA update, but it’s not Android 2.x

T-Mobile G1

We’re getting word that T-Mobile G1 users have been getting OTA updates over the past couple of days, but alas it’s not "THE BIG ONE" to Android 2.0 or 2.1. Instead, it looks like it’s a radio update, aka the infamous "call quality improvement."

Be sure to post your findings in the forums and check out what others are seeing. [T-Mobile forums]

T-Mobile gradually pushing out maintenance update for the G1

T-Mobile G1 update

Nope, Android fans, the T-Mobile G1 isn’t getting the almighty Android 2.1 update (or 2.0 for that matter) just yet. Instead, you can look forward to one of those lovely "maintenance updates." This one, dubbed DMD64, promises to improve call performance. So if you’re the type who loves radio updates (and who doesn’t, really), make sure you have the required Android data plan, sit back and wait for it to roll in. [via TMoNews]

Android 2.1 Ported To T-Mobile G1 ?

Rumor alert! Rumor alert! Looks like an Android user has ported Android 2.1 to the device nearest and dearest to our hearts, the T-Mobile G1. Now we don’t doubt that the T-Mobile G1, easily the most customizable Android device available, can get the 2.1 update but our impatience just wants us to see it for real, for real. Video will do but downloadable form is even better.

Since we’ve already seen the T-Mobile G1 rock Android 2.0 on video, having Android 2.1 ported onto it isn’t that much of a stretch. Word was the T-Mobile G1 was actually supposed to receive the official 2.x update but word is quite quiet around the Google/T-Mobile/Android side of things, guess they’re all focused on bigger and better things..
