Froyo update for MyTouch 3G Slide delayed
T-Mobile-centric news site TmoNews has gotten word from someone on the inside that a pair of issues have been discovered in the Froyo update package for the MyTouch 3G Slide. The first seems to be a glitch in the WiFi calling feature that prevents it from working correctly. The second is much more serious as the update file is being directed towards a partition on the phone that is not large enough to hold it. Their source also claims that HTC is aware of the issues and is already working on getting them ironed out so hopefully the wait won’t be too long until the update is ready for general release. HTC reports record fourth quarter with $3.3 billion in sales
HTC has perhaps been the single largest OEM supporter of Android since Google launched the OS. Remember, the G1, Hero, Nexus 1, Droid Incredible, Desire, and Evo 4G (and many, many more phones) were all made by the Taiwanese company and were largely considered the best Android phones on the market when each launched. The company just released their numbers for Q4 and to say they are impressive is an understatement. The company raked in north of $3.3 billion in sales, units shipped doubled year-over-year to 9 million, and total units shipped doubled from last year to 24.5 million. The places the company in close competition with Samsung as the fourth-largest global smartphone manufacturer behind Nokia, RIM, and Apple.
HTC has attributed most of this growth to the exploding demand for Android smartphones, and expects this trend to continue. HTC plans to cover their bases by strongly supporting Windows Phone 7 as well. The HD 7, in particular, looks like a great device for WP7 users as it is more or less an Evo sans Android. Mixed bag for T-Mobile’s Q2 numbers
A T-Mobile released its second-quarter earnings report today. Check out these numbers:
- Revenue is up to $4.7 billion this quarter, and increase from $4.63 billion in Q1, but a decrease from Q2 2009′s $4.77 billion
- 6.5 million users have 3G phones, up 25% from Q1 2010
- T-Mobile’s HSPA+ service covers 85 million Americans with 4G-like speeds
- There was a decline of 93,000 in the number of total subscribers, compared to a gain of 325,000 in Q2 2009
- Total customer numbers now stand at 33.6 million
- About 200,000 prepaid customers were lost in Q2, while just over 100,000 contract customers were added
So, a mix of good and bad for America’s No. 4 wireless provider. As contract customers have (on average) higher monthly bills, the net loss of those prepaid customers isn’t quite so bad. Also, these numbers don’t reflect the launch of the Samsung Vibrant, which by all indications has sold quite well for T-Mobile. Plus, TMO is supposed to be announcing their first fully HSPA+ compliant device soon and a rumored dual-core Snapdragon phone might be coming, both of which should give them something to brag about. Full presser after the break.

myTouch 3G Slide maintenance update (not Froyo) starts Wednesday
Those of you rocking a T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide, know this: A maintenance update — as in NOT Android 2.2 — is headed your way starting Aug. 4. Here’s what you have to look forward to, from T-Mobile’s mouths to our eyes:
- Updates to the T-Mobile online contact backup connection, which will improve battery life.
- Ability to send text messages while connected to WiFi.
- Genius button improvements: Ability to toggle GPS by voice, announce caller ID for incoming calls and allow answer or ignore, announce incoming text messages.
- Faves icon displayed next to notifications while device is locked.
- Overall speed and stability improvements.
T-Mobile says the update will be complete by Aug. 19, and it won’t be able to push it out after that. So get it while you can. [T-Mobile forums] Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

MyTouch 3G Slide review
T-Mobile’s Android slider packs a punch
The HTC MyTouch 3G Slide from T-Mobile USA is the Android smartphone that has seemed to fly under the radar. Released at a time when Snapdragon processors and AMOLED screens are all the rage, the mid-range specs on the Slide disguise the performance and feel of this qwerty slider. Packing its own flavor of the touted HTC Sense UI and running Android 2.1, the Slide was a phone I was itching to get my hands on and put it through the paces. Hit the jump to see my impressions of this solid, but forgotten phone.

HTC says to expect Android 2.2 updates by Christmas
Just because we see what looks like Froyo running on a phone with HTC Sense, doesn’t mean it’s right around the corner. The good folks over at Pocket-lint got some one-on-one time with Eric Lin, HTC‘s global PR and online community manager, at the recent Qualcomm Uplinq convention and got the straight scoop about Froyo on the new breed of HTC Sense phones.
At this point I’d like to ask everyone to turn off their WiFi…err I mean put down their pitchforks and rotten fruit. All sharp objects put away? HTC says to expect Froyo on their handsets by Christmas. And since you all are safely empty handed, he also says not to expect Gingerbread anytime this year. Allow me to quote Mr. Lin:
"It takes time to port all of our applications over to Froyo and then make sure that it is running well on each of our devices. That’s not like a one week kind of project. We need to make sure that our applications are taking advantage of the Froyo features. To make sure that they’re all running properly on the OS now that it’s a new version. And then to make sure that it’s running on our hardware as well as we expect."
I’m no happier than you guys are, but at least we’ll see Froyo on our Evos and Incredibles before Sony Ericsson updates the Xperia line. Feel free to discuss and vent in the comments. [Pocket-lint]
Update from Phil: Good lord, people. OK, we should have included the following line (but were trying to to steal all of Pocket-Lint’s quotes). Said Mr. Lin: "I would believe that we would be done with our Froyo updates before Christmas." Updates could come next week. Or next month. Or the month after. Regardless, everybody have a little patience. You’ll get Froyo in due time. This reaction is why we never get more than a ballpark time line.

Could this be the Froyo (Android 2.2) version of HTC Sense?
With 160,000 activations a day, there’s a huge number of people waiting for the HTC Sense UI version of Froyo to show up. I know all of us here sure are. Usually, we have to pass on the random screenshot tip that rolls in, but in this case they are worth talking about. To be sure — we can in no way verify that these are real, as anyone with a rudimentary set of Android ROM cooking skills and a copy of Photoshop could pull them off. On the other hand, a Froyo version of Sense UI should be in testing somewhere, and it would look pretty much like this (watermarks and all) if it were to show itself.
With all that out of the way, if anyone out there in the ‘tubes needs a hand testing, or removing watermarks from a legit Sense 2.2 leak, just sing out. I’m sure we can find you some help
Hit the break to see one more screenshot of the camera application showing off 720p resolution. Thanks Dan!

Voice Control App Showdown: Vlingo vs. the myTouch 3G Slide Genius button
Here at Android Central, we love the whole idea of using voice commands to make our phones work for us. In the smartphone world, Vlingo is pretty well-known, with apps on multiple platforms, and we’ve been using it a while now. Now drift back to the spring when we first started hearing about the Genius button on the MyTouch 3G Slide, and how it offers similar functionality, and you just know we had to check it out and see how it compares.
So hit the break, and watch as we pit Vlingo up against the Genius button and see which comes out on top.
