HTC Wildfire S swaggers CDMA bands at FCC

True to its namesake, the Wildfire S is preparing to blaze across our native prairies without abandon. After gaining the FCC’s nod of acceptance for use on our 1900 / 850MHz HSPA bands — followed by T-Mobile’s official announcement — the fun-sized candybar has received FCC approval for igniting our CDMA networks. A leaked roadmap suggests the Gingerbread treat is destined for US Cellular in October, but don’t be surprised if the little guy appears at Cricket, MetroPCS, Virgin Mobile, and the like. Even Verizon could benefit from the Wildfire S, seeing that the Motorola Citrus is downright sour. Just promise not to name it the Droid Burn, okay?

HTC Wildfire, Magic (myTouch 3G), and G1 Latest to Receive Honeycomb Ports [Video]

This image has no alt text

Honeycomb is beginning to reach back into the archives with a couple of new ports for older devices. By older, we mean two of the original Gs to hit the scene, the T-Mobile G1 and the myTouch 3G. This further spits in the face of the notion that Honeycomb requires a set of minimum specifications, though we are certain the G1s hardware isn’t recommended. Joining the myTouch and G1 is the HTC Wildfire which also received a Honeycomb port.

Now, it should go without saying that these ports are more proof of concept than the sort of thing you want to install on your device. As previously mentioned, the specs of these handsets aren’t the most apt for running Honeycomb, and even if they were the ports are rather non-functional. Pretty impressive, nonetheless.

HTC Wildfire getting Froyo over the next couple months, Europe this week

HTC Wildfire

Good news for you folks with the non-U.S. version of the HTC Wildfire: Your Froyo update is on the way. OK, so’s Christmas. But, really, it’s coming. HTC said so on its Facebook page this morning:

"We know many of you have been asking for information about an update for your Wildfire. Well, we have good news! Android 2.2 (aka Froyo) on Wildfire is scheduled to begin rolling out this week in Europe, reaching all areas of the world by February. Thanks for your patience as these updates roll out; we think you’ll enjoy the final product."

So what about the U.S. version? (That’s the Alltel model you see above.) We’d expect an update in that same timetable. Repeated for any U.S. carrier with the HTC Wildfire: We expect an update in the same timetable. Don’t make liars out of us. [Facebook]

Gingerbread SDK ROMs everywhere

HTC Wildfire with Gingerbread

Gingerbread ROMs are being ported from the 2.3 SDK device emulator left and right.  As of this writing, we have the Eris, the Hero, the Wildfire (pictured, and video after the break), and the Evo 4G all booting up Gingerbread, and I’m sure we probably will see more, the OG Droid and Droid Incredible can’t be far behind.

It’s awesome, just because it’s awesome.  Booting up Gingerbread and looking through the UI on a device it a load of fun.  Don’t expect too much going in, and be sure to have a good backup to return to, then give it a whirl.  There’s a video after the break to give you an idea of what to expect for the most part. [Eris; Hero; Wildfire; Evo] Thanks everyone who sent these in!

HTC reports record fourth quarter with $3.3 billion in sales

 HTC

HTC has perhaps been the single largest OEM supporter of Android since Google launched the OS. Remember, the G1, Hero, Nexus 1, Droid Incredible, Desire, and Evo 4G (and many, many more phones) were all made by the Taiwanese company and were largely considered the best Android phones on the market when each launched. The company just released their numbers for Q4 and to say they are impressive is an understatement. The company raked in north of $3.3 billion in sales, units shipped doubled year-over-year to 9 million, and total units shipped doubled from last year to 24.5 million. The places the company in close competition with Samsung as the fourth-largest global smartphone manufacturer behind Nokia, RIM, and Apple.

HTC has attributed most of this growth to the exploding demand for Android smartphones, and expects this trend to continue. HTC plans to cover their bases by strongly supporting Windows Phone 7 as well. The HD 7, in particular, looks like a great device for WP7 users as it is more or less an Evo sans Android. Join us after the break for a mini review of the 3.2-inch HTC Widlfire, available now for $29.99 on two-year contract.
