North Korea makes using a cellphone a war crime during 100 day mourning period

Dear Leader may have blessed his subjects with the gift of 3G in 2008 , but in his death he is taking it back… at least temporarily. As part of the country’s 100 days of mourning, cellphones have been banned within its borders.

Mirasol 5.7-inch eReader hands-on, courtesy of Kyobo and Shanda Bambook

The 5.7-inch Mirasol display is hardly a fresh item these days, but the final product carrying such a unique panel is still young. In fact, it’s only become available from Kyobo in South Korea fairly recently, but today we also learned that Chinese content provider Shanda will be offering the same hardware under the Bambook moniker towards the end of this month (obviously aiming for the Chinese New Year rush).

Kyobo eReader receives initial review, comes up short despite Mirasol display

If one of your e-reader’s components is great but the rest of the device is lacking, where does that leave you? The first review of the Kyobo eReader has arrived and while its Qualcomm-provided Mirasol screen is lauded, that’s about it for the good news. Depite the snazzy 5.7-inch touchscreen combined with 1Ghz SnapDragon CPU, WiFi and Android 2.3.5, the package falls apart due to its inability to load apps, subpar battery life and long load times.

Kyobo eReader with Mirasol display gets video walkthrough, does things E Ink can’t

Qualcomm’s Mirasol display technology was supposedly inspired by butterfly wings, and its progress over the past year has been appropriately erratic. It was happening , then it wasn’t , then it was again — but only in the Korea-confined Kyobo e-Reader . Despite all the flitting about, however, some consistent promises have been made: a ‘converged’ screen that’s like E Ink because it requires no backlight and lasts for “weeks” on a single charge, and like LCD in its ability to refresh quickly and handle color video

Programmable robots coming to Korean stores, will assimilate your Android phone

South Korea loves its robots. While the country prepares them to teach the kids and guard its prisons , smartphone-compatible models are now propping up shelves in hobbyist shops. Dongbu Robot (previously Dasarobot) is launching several new products for wannabe bot engineers, but it’s the Google OS-compatible HOVIS kits that caught our eye

Samsung promotes DRAM chief to vice chairman, implements ‘top-two’ structure

Samsung reshuffled its managerial hierarchy yesterday, promoting Kwon Oh Hyun, head of its DRAM operations, to vice chairman. Kwon, who successfully steered Samsung through an industry-wide price slump last quarter, will continue to head up the company’s chip and LCD divisions, while working alongside Jung Yeon Joo — the former CEO of Samsung C&T Corporation who was also promoted to vice chairman.

Cowon announces CE-based R7 media tablet, earns a few perplexed stares

Cowon makes some pretty slick looking Android PMPs , as well as some more underwhelming devices running Windows CE. The latest in the latter category is the R7 — a 7-inch media player that’s being billed as “full HD” (a claim that makes Cowon full of something else). Despite being the size of a small tablet the R7 display is only 800 x 480, though, it will output 1080p over HDMI.

South Korea creates speedy new UAV, gives it VTOL capabilities to boot

In the never-ending quest to give our future robot overlords better tools with which to enslave us, the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) has built what it claims to be the fastest UAV on the planet. Checking in at five meters (16.4 feet) long with a seven meter (23 foot) wingspan, the as-yet unnamed aircraft can cruise at 400km/h (249mph). Speed’s not its only standout feature either, as the Korean UAV can perform vertical takeoffs and landings ( VTOL ) as well

LG Optimus EX sneaks out of its box, reminds us it’s still here

Remember the Optimus EX? Not to be confused with LG’s LTE flavor of smartphone, this dual-cored Android has been spotted hanging around outside its cardboard enclosure. This slab was previously revealed a few months back, flashing (quite literally) a 700 nit display alongside a refreshed 1.2GHz Tegra 2 processor. Like these brief glimpses of the phone, pricing and release date info is light on detail, with no hint of the mobile TV-toting handset planning a visit over here. While LG’s latest presumably ambles up to Korean phone stores very soon, we offer up another photo after the break to help satiate those Optimus affections that may otherwise go unrequited.
