MakerBot’s Turtle Shell Racers cruise around our offices (video)

This weekend’s Maker Faire in New York City was lousy with 3D printers. Every tent in the outdoor area was packed to capacity with the things, their owners standing beside them, showing off the small trinkets they’d created with the devices. Judging from their presence, there seems little question that the technology has proven a success with the maker community. Amongst the general public, however, they’ve been a much harder sell. Perhaps it’s the price, or maybe it’s the generally dull connotations of the word “printer,” or it could just be the fact that there hasn’t been the right iconic image to help sell the products to the public at large.

MakerBot’s Turtle Shell Racers may well be just the ambassador that the world of 3D printing needs. The toy football-sized RC cars are proof positive that the devices can turn just about anything you can imagine into reality. There are certain limitations, of course, like the fact that the objects printed can’t be larger than five inches in diameter. The Shells’ creator circumvented that admitted shortcoming by assembling the products out of small pieces that snap together. Check out more hands-on impressions and a video with the racers after the jump.

Super Pixel Bros is Super Mario for squares (video)

Is the complexity of regular Super Mario Bros. getting you down? Good news: modder Retro Brad has been putting a lot of time into his own version of the game, recreating levels of the original title on an 8 x 8 LED matrix, with all of its characters represented by a single pixel. Below that screen is an LCD, which lets users keep track of their score, lives and level, while a Monofonic Audio Chip offers sound effects played through a built-in speaker. All of this is housed in a portable eight-button system that, for the record, is decidedly less clunky than Nintendo’s new circle-pad add-on for the 3DS. Video of Super Pixel Bros in action after the break.

Nintendo drops DS Lite to $100, makes it easier to (Mario) party

Hot on the heels of a Wii price drop from about two weeks ago, Nintendo has announced that it’ll be lowering the DS Lite’s price to $100 (from about $130) starting on June 5th. The big N claims that its pushed over 48.9 million DS handhelds to consumers in the U.S., adding that many of the Mario DS titles have also sold well into the millions. To highlight the achievements, six of the best selling Mario themed games for DS will be getting a red makeover to their packaging — see above right — for easy pickin’s at your favorite retail shop (no discount apparently). It may not have 3D, but the drop in price, added with less eye strain, and a long lasting battery should be enough to make the 3DS a little jealous.

Super Mario gets a Portal gun, you monster (video)

Before Portal 2 there was Portal, and before Portal there was Super Mario Bros. Bring these together and you get a mushroom-chomping Italian plumber ruling the 2D world — outside the cold confines of Aperture Science — with the infamous Portal gun. The next logical step? Turn this into a first-person game. Go on, Reggie, make it happen.

RFID-enabled vending machine ditches coinage, gets Mario Bros. tone (video)

A Twitter-enabled kitty door it is not, but this RFID-equipped soda machine is by far one of the most practical DIY projects we’ve seen in sometime. A Canadian tinkerer picked up this pop pusher a few years back, and has been using it to sling drinks in his building ever since. Unfortunately, finding the right change to feed the machine proved an issue for his neighbors, so he did what any logical hacker would do, and built in a contactless payment system. Using an Arduino, an Ethernet shield, an LCD screen, and an RFID reader, he created a system that allows customers to swipe a card and easily add funds from an online account. Best of all, every time you press that little blue button you get a Mario Bros. sample. Big ups, PopCARD. Video after the break.
