How to swap the Sprint HTC Evo 4G microSD card

[YouTube link]

If you’re the type of person who frequently swaps microSD cards and are looking at the Sprint HTC Evo 4G, then this video might be a little painful. First, the card’s under the battery. That’s not all that unusual, though it’s still a tad unwelcome. But getting at the card on the Evo 4G’s a little tricky. First there’s a tab that needs to be pried up to unseat the card. And that’s easy. But actually removing the card is a bit more difficult given its placement. Long fingernails may help (and forget about it if you’re a nail-biter), but even then it’s pretty tough, and we needed tweezers to actually remove the card.

Getting it back in is a little easier, but it still might take a couple of tries. It’s just one of those trade-offs we have to come to live with in the smartphone world.

Android doesn’t play nice (yet) with 32-gigabyte microSD cards

Android 32GB microSD card

If you were thinking about shelling out some serious jing (translation: spending a lot of money) on one of those new 32GB microSD cards, you might want to hold off for a little bit. Google confirmed to CNET that Android can’t actually format a card that big, which could lead to some trouble. The good news is that a fix is on the way and "will be part of our next over-the-air update." Google didn’t say when that might be. [CNET]

Update: Yes, folks, let there be no confusion: You in fact can use a 32GB card. Never said you couldn’t. You just can’t format it. It’s not a huge deal, but it’s something that needs to be fixed.

Finger-on with the 32GB Sandisk microSD card

Sandisk 32GB microSD card

We must say, there’s something kind of cool — and, yes, very nerdy — about holding this much memory on your fingertip. But there it is, the recently announced 32GB microSD card from Sandisk. Interesting story: It’s manufactured by taking a wafer of 4GBs of memory, shaving it down — it’s made thicker than necessary, otherwise it’d be too flimsy initially — and then stacking them eight high to get to the 32GB. MSRP is $200 for now, but that will drop in time.

3,000 tainted microSD cards to be replaced by Vodafone Spain

htc magic

Last week Vodafone Spain announced it had determined the microSD card to be the cause of some crazy activity on their HTC Magic. When this had first surfaced, Vodafone Spain said that it was an isolated incident and only affected the one device in the UK. (And we might have even scoffed a bit at Panda Security possibly crying wolf.)

But over a rather short period of time we have seen that number jump from 1 card to 3,000 cards now. While they have admitted that they are replacing these due to infection, and not just as a precaution, other details around this have been kept rather secret. Is it really just 3,000 cards, or will we be posting an update next week that it has grown to over 10,000? [Engadet via Movil Zona]

How to: Get at the Motorola Devour’s battery and microSD card

Motorola Devour battery

We’re well into our review of the Motorola Devour (check out our initial hands-on), but we wanted to take a station break to mention how to get at the battery and microSD card. Because the Devour is one of those newfangled "unibody" devices — as in cast from a single piece of aluminum — it doesn’t have the traditional battery door on the back. Instead, it’s tucked away into the side of the device. The official page from the manual is above, and check out our how-to after the break.
