Cincinnati Bell brings Froyo to Milestone XT720, holds your hand through rooting process
Rooting is the dark side of the Android platform. It opens your phone up to a world of unsanctioned opportunities and typically has carriers swatting you back with illegal network usage fees. So you’ll understand how bizarre it is that Cincinnati Bell is offering Milestone XT720 users software and an instructional video how-to that boots Eclair out, for its Froyo successor. Making use of the widely-popular SuperOneClick app, intrepid owners will be walked through the usual root, back-up and ROM-flashing steps. But the regional carrier’s no dummy as the procedure ends with users unrooting their devices, freeing the network from unwanted congestion and reducing the risk of a bricked phone. Customers of this Ohio-based provider should check the source for a forbidden peek into Android’s underbelly.

TELUS Motorola Milestone to Receive Android 2.2 Froyo Next Week

Earlier in the week we saw the first batch of Motorola Milestones begin to receive Android 2.2 Froyo when the update went live in Europe. We also learned Canadian carrier TELUS would be bringing the same OS upgrade to their Milestone in the near future. We now have a more specific time frame in which to expect Froyo in the Great White North. Motorola Canada has made a post their Facebook page promising the update for next with a download link to follow as soon as it was available. With the update already available in other regions it would a shame if it were delayed.

Desire, Desire HD & Milestone to Get Gingerbread in Spring on Telus, More Androids Slated for Upgrades

The folks at MobileSyrup have pinged Telus and asked them what’s up with updates for various Android handsets. Of note were the HTC Desire and Desire HD: both are said to be getting Gingerbread sometime this Spring. (It wasn’t said if this would include the latest version of HTC Sense or not.)
Other phones include the Motorola Milestone which is now slated to get Froyo in other regions soon. The Samsung Galaxy Apollo and the LG Shine Plus will both get upgrades, with the latter actually getting Gingerbread instead of Froyo. Fun times ahead for you Telus folks indeed.
Motorola Milestone achieves Android 2.2 milestone at last, Froyo update ready for download
The road to Android 2.1 may have been a long and treacherous one for Milestone users, but the one to Android 2.2 wasn’t even certain of reaching its goal. Thankfully, Moto has managed to conclude its “exhaustive testing process” and is now making a Froyo firmware update available to Milestone users wishing to step their software up a notch. Flash Player 10.1, a faster browser and mobile hotspot capabilities await the intrepid updater, but Motorola warns that any DRM-locked media you have on your SD card will be lost. Weirdly enough, there’s also a caution that “users may experience some adverse effects associated with the upgrade which could include slower operation of some phone functions and applications.” Once you’ve read and understood all the warnings, smash the source link to download the new software.

Attention all Motorola Milestone users in Europe: No longer must you be mocked by your American counterparts running around with Froyo on their DROID handsets, Motorola released the Android 2.2 update you have bee waiting for. If you are in a region supported by the update, you can grab it directly from Motorola’s support page. Motorola has also provided release notes if you are unsure of all the goodness that awaits you upon updating.
We can’t tell you what took the update so long when the same phone under a different name has had it since last summer, but let’s let bygones be bygones and be happy it arrived at all. Now, how about that Gingerbread…

CyanogenMod 6 port for the Motorola Milestone now stable
![]()
After an amazing amount of hard work, hard working hackers have built a stable Froyo custom ROM for the Motorola Milestone. It’s a port of CyanogenMod 6, and thanks to the new kernel ripped out of a ROM leaked from Brazilian carrier Vivo, there are no issues with wake time or signal. I salute everyone involved in this work, and while not a Milestone user myself, I tip my hat and my glass to you all. For any Milestone users looking for more information, see the source link, and enjoy.
I’m sure many are asking, "Why is this such big news, and why did it take so long?" The Milestone was Motorola’s first foray into the horrible and unfriendly practice of encrypting the bootloader, making third party ROMs dependent on software from Motorola. The fact that a small group of users was able to circumvent the protection scheme tells us that it was a pretty damn silly idea to begin with. If the front door is locked, people will find a way to use the window. Developers who stuck with the Milestone through all this nonsense deserve our admiration and respect. Froyo (2.2.1) leaked and modded for the Motorola Milestone [video]
As proof that you can’t keep a hacker from besting anything you design, the G.O.T. team wrangled themselves a leak of the upcoming Android 2.2.1 update for the Motorola Milestone, made it better, stronger, and faster, and then released it for the community long before Motorola and the carriers ever will. And as you can see from the benchmark above, they did an amazing job on the year-old hardware. In the words of someone who’s been running it for a bit "I’ve been running it for 6 hrs now with no problem. And it’s really fast!!"
A few things do need saying here — there doesn’t appear to be a version available for the Cellular South Milestone, and the installation instructions aren’t for the timid — thank the locked-down bootloader for that one fellas. Have a look at the source link and digest the instructions and decide for yourself if its something you can work out. There’s video (in Korean) of it in action after the break. [G.O.T.] Thanks for the tip, Sean!

Silent update brings Froyo features to Eclair Android Market
We’ve got reports coming in that users with some Milestones, Vibrants and Fascinates running Android version 2.1-update 1 are seeing a silent update to the Android Market (version 2007 — an update from version 1714), and it brings some of the features (including the widget) from Froyo along with. On the other hand, we’ve got a Fascinate in our hands that doesn’t have any of those changes in its Market. After some digging around we’re pretty sure that something’s going on, so we’re enlisting you guys to help get to the bottom of it. Head into the forums and let’s compare, shall we?
