Notion Ink explains OMAP over Tegra decision for the Adam II
While which chip ends up in a particular device will significantly affect its performance and access to future upgrades, it’s not often that we get to peek behind the curtain and find out why those decisions were made. A post on Notion Ink’s new Adam II development blog adds some transparency to the process, discussing the switch from an NVIDIA Tegra chip in its first Adam slate to a TI OMAP solution in the just announced tablet. According to the blog, while theoretical performance marks are nice, the company decided its expertise and that of available programmers would let it squeeze the most out of a Texas Instruments chip, as opposed to its first effort that didn’t “fully utilize” the power of Tegra

It’s not been a great year for Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company : the chip foundry behind Qualcomm and NVIDIA’s silicon (amongst others) saw profits slump by 22.5 percent in the last quarter of 2011. Like everything in this world, however, trouble is relative: the business still made a net profit of just over a billion US dollars

MSI launches GT783 gaming laptop, burns through Battlefield 3 with GTX 580M GPU
Another day, another behemoth of a laptop packing some super-charged components for the demanding, but mobile, gamer out there. Underneath the hood of the MSI GT783 series is a quad-core 2.2GHz Core i7 2670QM along with a 2GB GTX 580M GPU for some pixel-punishing performance. Both machines also boast a 17.3-inch 1080p screen but, while the cheaper GT783R settles for 12GB of RAM and a pair of 750GB drives in a RAID array, the GT783 ups the ante to 16GB of DDR3 and trades in one of those spinning platters for a 128GB SSD.

A few years back, Intel prognosticated that NVIDIA’s CUDA technology was destined to be a “footnote” in computing history. Since that time, Jen-Hsun Huang’s low level virtual machine (LLVM) has more than proven its worth in several supercomputers , and now NVIDIA has released the CUDA source code to further spread the parallel computing gospel.
