US Wi-Fi Xooms now getting Ice Cream Sandwich OTA
You might have thought being the first Honeycomb tablet, and offering a completely stock Android experience, would give the Motorola Xoom some sort of priority when it comes to updates to Android 4.0. Sadly and surprisingly for tablet early-adopters that was not the case, with the Transformer Prime first to hop the update train to Ice Cream Sandwich Town. A week later the Xoom is now catching up, with an OTA update percolating down from the cloud to users, but for the moment it appears only American Wi-Fi versions of the slate are receiving.

Simple.tv DVR / placeshifter frees free TV from the constraints of location, time
One of the many innovative products we checked out tonight was this ViXS XCode 4210 powered Simple.TV box, which tunes into free, unencrypted channels (even in HD ) via cable or antenna. Where it starts to differ from other boxes like Sling and Monsoon however, is that it eschews any direct video out or even passthrough, working solely to transcode those feeds to variable bitrate MPEG-4 streams for playback on internet-connected mobile devices and TV boxes

Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus updated to Android 4.1.0, finally ready to dance?
A lucky human known as “Bradgog” posted the above screenshot to a thread on My Droid World last night, ostensibly heralding the arrival of Android 4.1 on Verizon’s Samsung Galaxy Nexus . As you can see in the image (purportedly taken on Verizon’s 3G network), the firmware update appears to bring a new baseband radio to the handset, which, in turn, may explain the delay in bringing the device to Big Red’s stable

Galaxy Nexus volume fix in the works, Google confirms
Google has heard your Galaxy Nexus complaints loud and clear, and it’s already working on a fix. That’s just about all the company had to say today, in response to widespread gripes over a strange volume bug on Samsung’s new flagship handset. “We are aware of the volume issue and have developed a fix,” Google said in a statement. “We will update devices as soon as possible.” It appears, then, that the problem lies not in the phone’s hardware, but in its software, meaning that a simple OTA update may just do the trick. No word yet on when we can expect to see the fix, but we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we find out.

Boxee Box Live TV dongle shipping for $49 in January 2012, pre-orders open today
No point in hiding in plain view, eh? Boxee has just affirmed that the leaked Live TV dongle is legit, and it’ll be splashing down on North American shores in January. The Boxee Box Live TV dongle will allow North American users to connect an antenna to their Box to watch channels like ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC in HD with no monthly fee — assuming you’re close enough to an OTA tower to receive said signals, of course. Once equipped, a Box will be able to fetch content from the major networks, Vudu, Netflix and Hulu, though you may want to spring for that bolstered internet connection.
Boxee Live TV works with signals from HDTV antennas (using ATSC) or an unencrypted cable connection (using ClearQAM), and a portable antenna is included. Users who live out in the ‘burbs may want to consider something a bit beefier, and if you’re hoping to use this thing with something other than the Boxee Box… well, keep dreaming. In fact, Boxee has confirmed that even the forthcoming update of its Boxee software for Mac and PC won’t support the device, so you’ll be forced to pony up for D-Link’s hardware if you’re looking to party. There’s also no DVR function in sight (sort of defeating the purpose, given just how many TVs have tuners already), but hey — who knows what’ll roll out at CES. Pre-orders are available down in the source link, with $49 claiming your spot in line.
