Super AMOLED plus explained

Super AMOLED plus

Samsung has shown us two new high-end Android phones this week (so far!) at CES — the yet unnamed Samsing 4G LTE phone for Verizon, and the Samsung Infuse 4G.  Both have had what they are calling Super AMOLED plus screen technology.  We dug around to find out the differences between Super AMOLED and Super AMOLED Plus, because that the kind of thing we do.

Super AMOLED plus increases the number of sub-pixels by 50 percent — this means twelve sub-pixels instead of eight.  This makes the screen even more visible in bright light, and should help make text and the edges of images crisper, while still keeping the gorgeous color that AMOLED displays provide.  This is the kind of tech improvement that seems small, until you actually use one.  Our fellas on the floor at CES are saying they look beautiful!

Samsung shows off 7" super-AMOLED display

7 inch samoled display

Samsung is showing off their new seven inch super-AMOLED display in Japan at the FPD International 2010 show.  The panel is WXVGA (1200×600), and as you can see above is being showcased in the next-generation Galaxy Tab.  Have a look at any of the Galaxy S phones, SAMOLED is pretty amazing, and seeing it on the Tab will be a welcome sight.  The price increase that’s likely to come, not so much.  Samsung states that they will begin selling the new screens sometime in 2011. Samsung Galaxy S and Gorilla Glass combine powers

samsung galaxy s

Corning today announced that its Gorilla Glass — an ultra durable alkali-aluminosilicate that can withstand the most uber of scratches – is engineered into all Samsung Galaxy S phones. The company even goes as far to say that its product enhances the performance of the already eye-popping brilliant Super AMOLED display. Now, it’s understood that the Gorilla Glass doesn’t make the screen brighter or crisper, but it certainly does add to the phone’s premium feature set by giving that beautiful screen some much needed protection. All in all, that Super AMOLED screen isn’t as fragile as you might think, and this could definitely be seen as another reason to choose Samsung’s gem over the competition. [via Business Wire]

Samsung announces Q2 results

Samsung

Samsung has announced its second-quarter 2010 earnings, and the electronics giant is sitting pretty.  Revenues were 37.89 trillion Korean Won (about $32 billion USD).  That’s a 17 percent year-over-year increase.  The net income for the second quarter was 4.28 trillion Korean Won (about $3.8 billion USD).

Of interest to us — Samsung says it sold 63.8 million handsets in the quarter, which is a 22 percent YoY increase.  Samsung seems pretty open with the breakdown of all the numbers, including some interesting facts about phone pricing, their plans for smartphone market share increase through the Galaxy S line, and the LCD market overall are in the press release, which you can read after the break. [Samsung] Thanks to Professor Keith for help with the currency conversions!

Is the Samsung Vibrant coming to T-Mobile a week earlier than expected?

Vibrant release July 15

Remember that July 21 date for the release of the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant on T-Mobile?  It looks like that’s not gonna happen.  Instead, some leaked documents say that the phone will actually be available on July 15 — a full week or so early.  Maybe T-Mobile decided to get in on the party a little early to time with Verizon’s Droid X launch, or maybe they just love us more than we thought.  Either way it looks like you ‘ll have an opportunity to get some 4 inch SAMOLED goodness in your hands a week sooner than we all expected.  [Tmonews | Engadget]

Samsung Galaxy S most likely going to T-Mobile

Even though it hasn’t been officially announced yet, you can bet your bottom dollar that the Samsung Galaxy S will be headed to T-Mobile’s Android lineup. How do we know you ask? Well it’s simple. There’s this thing called a “media server number” which corresponds with what network the phone will be going to, and in this case the numbers match up perfectly with the big “T.”  Now, we know how anxious everybody is to get their hands on the Galaxy S’s Super-AMOLED magic, so hopefully it’s sooner than later that it receives some carrier branding and a long awaited red carpet rollout.   [via TmoNews]
