Qualcomm chips complete first successful VoIP-over-LTE to WCDMA handoff

For now, voice over LTE is but an idea — one with unrealized potential, as Verizon, AT&T and Metro PCS all still rely on their 3G networks for voice duty.

Qualcomm’s MSM8960 Snapdragon S4 benchmarks pop up online

We put Qualcomm’s S4 development platform through its paces ( twice , no less) at CES , but shorn of the glitz of Las Vegas, does it have the oomph to wow us? Someone at the company loosed Nenamark 2 on the slate, producing a score of 54.90. Given the fact that its producing graphics for a 1024 x 600 screen, we’re excited to see it comfortably edge the Galaxy S II Skyrocket (54.1) and Galaxy Note (32.8) — with our mouths watering at the thought of what this 28nm CPU can do in a smartphone.

AT&T Pantech Element hands-on at CES 2012 (video)

The Pantech Element has been hanging around the rumor mill for quite some time, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when we saw it show up at the AT&T Developer Summit keynote earlier today. All of the specs were right on with what we’d heard before: 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon CPU, 8-inch TFT XGA display, 5MP rear camera / 2MP front-facing, 6,400 mAh battery for over 12 hours of high-use battery life and of course, waterproof with IP57 certification. We got a little clarification on what Pantech means by this, and it turns out that the tablet can be submerged in up to one foot of water for thirty minutes without batting an eye.

Kyobo eReader receives initial review, comes up short despite Mirasol display

If one of your e-reader’s components is great but the rest of the device is lacking, where does that leave you? The first review of the Kyobo eReader has arrived and while its Qualcomm-provided Mirasol screen is lauded, that’s about it for the good news. Depite the snazzy 5.7-inch touchscreen combined with 1Ghz SnapDragon CPU, WiFi and Android 2.3.5, the package falls apart due to its inability to load apps, subpar battery life and long load times.

Qualcomm’s two new 1GHz dual-core chipsets make S1-to-S4 migration easier for manufacturers (updated)

If the most recent batch of S4 chips from Qualcomm wasn’t enough to completely satiate your thirst for new SoC’s, the folks from San Diego are adding two more options to the already heapin’ pile. At the 2011 Uplinq China Conference in Shenzhen, Qualcomm announced the MSM8625 and MSM8225 S4-class dual-core chipsets, both of which can clock up to 1GHz and pack an Adreno 203 GPU plus a 3G modem

Kyobo, Qualcomm make Mirasol color displays a reality, with the Kyobo eReader

Don’t look now, but Mirasol has just arisen from the dead. Today, Korea’s Kyobo Book Centre and Qualcomm jointly unveiled the world’s first Mirasol-coated e-reader, just a few months after CEO Paul Jacobs heralded the demise of his company’s color e-paper format. The device, known as the Kyobo eReader, sports a 5.7-inch, 1024 x 768 color display with 223ppi and touchscreen capabilities, runs Android 2.3 and is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S2 CPU. Kyobo says you’ll be able to use the WiFi-enabled slate for “weeks” on a single charge, as long as you do so at decreased brightness, and for a total of 30 minutes per day. The eReader is available now for around $310, but only in South Korea. There’s no indication that it’ll be making its way to other markets anytime soon, but in the meantime, sate yourself with a portion of PR, after the break.

Qualcomm announces Snapdragon S4 Liquid mobile development platform tablet on The Engadget Show, we go hands-on (video)

At its investor conference earlier today, Qualcomm unveiled a variety of new Snapdragon processors to join its recently-announced MSM8960 S4 chip. But we got an exclusive first look at the 8960 in New York City this evening, in the form of a mobile development platform (MDP) tablet demo during The Engadget Show. The tablet the company had on hand isn’t much to look at — it’s not the slimmest we’ve seen, and it feels a bit clunkier than models destined for consumers — but its specs, which include an on-die LTE modem (the first of its kind — we were seeing download speeds of around 45 Mbps), dual 1080p cameras (and another two for 3D), seven microphones, a spattering of sensors and a handful of connectors make this the ultimate platform for Android developers. Not convinced? Join us past the break for a hands-on walkthrough with Raj Talluri, Qualcomm’s VP of Product Management, and stay turned for his segment from The Engadget Show.

Qualcomm announces a slew of new Snapdragon processors, upgrades, mobile games

It’s shaping up to be a busy morning for Qualcomm. The San Diego-based mobile chipmaker issued a bunch of announcements today, including a number of additions to its S4 line of next-generation processors. The list of new S4 chips includes the MSM8660A, MSM8260A, MSM8630, MSM8230, MSM8627, MSM8227, APQ8060A and APQ8030, which join the already announced MSM8960, MSM8930 and APQ8064. The new chips feature the Krait CPU, aimed at upping mobile performance, while offering better power management and battery life. Also on the list are upgrades to four members of the company’s S1 entry-level smartphone chip line — the MSM7225A, MSM7625A, MSM7227A and MSM7627A have been juiced up for better performance.

Oh, and there are games. The company is expanding its already voluminous Snapdragon GamePack to include titles like The Ball, Fight Game Heroes, and Galaga Special Edition — casual and console games aimed at showcasing its chips’ abilities. The list also includes the introduction of Snapdragon GameCommand, an app aimed at showcasing those showcasing apps, making them easier to find and offering up gaming news. GameCommand will be hitting early next year. The new games will be available through the Android Market for handsets packing Snapdragon processors. Lots of press info after the break.
