T-Mobile Vivacity unveiled for the UK, appears to be an adopted ZTE handset

G’morning there good lady, and who might you be? Why, she’s the UK-bound T-Mobile Vivacity, which, while pretty likely to be a ZTE-born smartphone, is still keeping her specification cards close to its chest. We do know, however, that she’ll arrive with a 3.5-inch touchscreen and five megapixel camera on the back. A front-facing shooter, slightly larger body and a distinct lack of ZTE branding all help to differentiate the Vivacity from her sister, the previously announced (and US-destined) ZTE Score. We predict she probably won’t be a woman of expensive tastes, and we look forward to meeting her in the flesh next month. While T-Mobile may not have got the memo about phone naming, interested parties can stake their claim to more info at the sign-up link below.

Well, that didn’t take long. Less than a week after O2 announced that the Galaxy Note would be “coming soon,” Samsung’s 5.3-inch handset has just popped up for sale on the UK carrier’s site. It’s available now for £250 (or about $396) on the most basic of monthly plans, offering a hybridized notepad/tablet experience, in exchange. The provider is also offering £100 worth of free movies and music to early buyers, available for download via Samsung Hub. Interested parties can grab it now, at the source link below.

Roku planning to bring set-top boxes to Canada, UK in early 2012

It’s been a big year for Roku. The streaming content box manufacturer launched its Roku 2 HD, XD and XS this summer, with a $50 LT model coming just last month. Now, the Netflix / HBO Go / Angry Birds player will cross the border into Canada and the U.K., with the expansion set to begin in early 2012. The company is looking to build its 350 channels with region-specific content, which can be provided free, supported by ads or with a subscription — and if you choose to add your own content to the service, you’d certainly be in good company.

First happy Galaxy Nexus customer isn’t so happy, wants to exchange it (update: replacement works fine)

Well, this is awkward. Samsung’s PR team tweeted the above picture of Alex Ioannou as he officially became the first person to pick up a Galaxy Nexus in the UK. But Alex just got in touch to tell us that he’s less than satisfied. We only have his word to go on at this point (and for all we know he could be secretly working for LG), but he insists he’s having trouble syncing with Gmail because the usual account setup options are missing. Instead, his phone was apparently preloaded with a bunch of weird dev stuff — including the handy option to “Report a WTF condition.” We’re desperately hoping that he was given a developer model by mistake and this will all be resolved when he exchanges. He’s back in the store right now and says that apologetic reps are feeding him with ice cream sandwiches while he waits. Check out the ‘After’ photo and screenshots just beyond the break.

Update: Alex has confirmed that he’s taken ownership of a new Galaxy Nexus which works perfectly. All is well.

Mat Smith and Richard Lai contributed to this report

Warner Bros. signs distribution deal with Lovefilm, ahead of Netflix’s UK arrival

With Netflix creeping ever closer to its UK doorstep, Lovefilm is readying its defense — beginning with Warner Bros. Today, the Amazon-owned streaming and rental service announced a new, multi-year partnership with the Brothers Warner, promising to deliver “wider choice and more access” to content across multiple platforms. Under the deal, users will be able to access a range of Warner Bros.’ recent and forthcoming titles on their iPad, PlayStation 3, and, as of later this year, their Xbox 360, among other devices. The agreement will go into effect this December, with films like The Dark Knight, The Hangover, Gran Torino and Sex and the City 2 all available for exclusive viewing. Beginning in 2012, customers will be able to rent Warner Bros. titles 60 days after retail release, either via Lovefilm’s DVD and Blu-Ray subscription service, or the studio’s WarnerFilms channel. Intrigued cinephiles can whet their appetites with the full PR, after the break.

Galaxy Nexus headed to Bell and Virgin Mobile in Canada, Three in the UK (update: Rogers too)

We expect there will be more to come, but you can now officially add at least three more carriers to the list confirmed to be offering the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Those include Bell and Virgin Mobile in Canada, and Three in the UK, which joins O2 as a confirmed carrier for the flagship Ice Cream Sandwich phone across the pond. The two Canadian carriers aren’t offering a firm release date or pricing details just yet — though they’re happy to take your email address and keep you posted — but Three lists an off-contract price of £499.99 (or just under $800) and is promising “earliest delivery” by November 18th.

Update: You can now add one more to that list — Rogers has confirmed on Twitter that it will be offering the Galaxy Nexus in January. Reservations start tomorrow.

O2 launches LTE trial across UK ahead of next year’s 4G spectrum auction

BT’s gonna have to make some room at the 4G table, now that O2 has launched its very own LTE trial across the UK. Today, the provider dipped its toes into the LTE pool for the first time within London, a little less than a year after announcing a similar test across Germany. The nine-month trial will begin at 25 test locations across London, before spreading out to encompass a full 40 square kilometers and some 1,000 participants. Obviously, not all customers will be able to grab a slice of the pie, but those who do receive one of Samsung’s B3730 modems will benefit from connection speeds of up to 100Mbps. According to the company, that should allow users to download a 500MB file in just one minute, compared to the five minutes it would take on a normal 3G connection. Time will only tell whether these dreams become a reality, but O2 is certainly hoping to benefit from the feedback it receives from its guinea pigs, ahead of next year’s 4G spectrum auction. Find out more, in the full PR after the break.

Netflix signs up Lionsgate UK films for its British debut

Now that Netflix has made its plans to launch in the British Isles official, it’s gotten busy signing content deals and the latest affiliation is with Lionsgate’s UK arm. The deal makes Netflix the “exclusive subscription streaming service” in the UK and Ireland for the studios first-run movies, with upcoming titles like The Expendables 2, and the Dirty Dancing remake already on deck. The agreement also extends to catalog hits like Reservoir Dogs, 3:10 to Yuma and The Blair Witch Project, which should be available when the service launches early next year. Check the press release after the break for all the details, although there’s still plenty of time to decide whether or not its worth your pounds, pence, or bank notes.
