Xperia X10 gets an update, still waiting on Android 2.1

The good news: An update is rolling out the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 as we speak. The bad news: Nope, it’s still stuck on Android 1.6. Here’s what you are getting, though:This update focuses on improving the general performance, speed and res…

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 gets rooted

No carriers’ locked systems are safe when Android hackers set their sights on them.  Some are easy, some are tough, but eventually they all fall.  This time in the spotlight is the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.  With the unknowns surrounding…

Screen showdown — AMOLED vs. LCD vs. SAMOLED in direct sunlight

AMOLED screens look amazing, whether the 3.5 inch variety or something a little bigger like the new breed of television sets.  Their big letdown when compared to traditional LCD displays has been the washed out hazy look when viewed in direct sunl…

Android 2.1 update for Xperia X10 line moved from Q4 to ‘latter part of Q3′

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 line

At the same time as it announced the Xperia X8, Sony Ericsson revised its update schedule for the Xperia X10, X10 Mini Pro and X10 Mini (seen here from left). Previously slated to get Android 2.1 in the fourth quarter of this year, updates should now start "from Q3 onwards," according to a press release and the official SE Product Blog. The blog goes a tad further, saying the upgrades will start "from the latter part of Q3." Still long overdue, but some movement is better than none at all. [Press release, SE Product Blog]

The Xperia X10 Mini gets unboxed and reminds us how small it is

Surprise! The Xperia X10 Mini is really small. How small? Take a look at that unboxing video above, the accessories of the X10 Mini is bigger than the X10 Mini itself! Even though we saw the X10 Mini at MWC and have seen commercials for it, we just never get over how small the thing is. It’s a cute little phone that can totally corner the mini smartphone market. Well, if there’s such thing as a mini smartphone market that is. The X10 Mini looks to have customizable battery covers so you can rock all the pink, red, green, and silver you like. Though its big brother device disappointed us, maybe we’ll look at the X10 Mini in a different light. If just has to get here. [SE product blog]

An Xperia X10 Mini commercial that dances around the phone

Here’s Sony Ericsson’s latest ad spot on the Xperia X10 Mini (which just cleared the FCC!) and while we applaud the amazing finger dancing choreography, we just don’t get it. Sure, fingers dancing on a table can look great on screen but it does nothing to show off the actual features of the phone. Wouldn’t it be much more effective if the fingers danced on the phone’s screen, showing off its features, than around it? So why not show off the Xperia X10 Mini’s biggest appeal, its portability, instead?

What do you guys think? Should we relax and enjoy the "fun-ness" of the ad spot? Or did Sony Ericsson miss once again? [via androidandme]

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 not getting Android 2.1 update until Q4 2010

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10

We’re not quite sure of any fun way to spin it: The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 — languishing with Android 1.6 and a clumsy first-generation of the Timescape and Mediascape interface — is now slated to get a major software overhaul … in the fourth quarter of this year.

According to the Sony Ericsson Product Blog, the major improvements will be:

  • Upgrade to Android OS version 2.1
  • HD video recording as per the same execution as Sony Ericsson Vivaz
  • Wireless home connectivity via DLNA
  • Improvements to signature applications Timescape and Mediascape to make them even smarter and richer

And those are welcome improvements — if they were coming tomorrow. But October’s a smartphone lifetime away. And that’s one of the biggest problems we’re seeing with Android fragmentation. The OS is progressing so quickly that custom interfaces just can’t keep up. Granted there was a major shift between Android 1.x and 2.x, but still. For The Xperia line (the X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro will get Android 2.1 updates in Q4, too) to get their updates nearly a year after Android 2.1 was first released is, sadly, laughable. Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 makes cameo in Sean Kingston-Justin Bieber video

Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 in Justin Bieber-Sean Kingston video

We’ll preface this by saying we don’t have any idea what’s going on in the Sean Kingston-Justin Bieber super-smash-top 40-drop-it-like-it’s-hot song "Eenie Meenie" other than there are a lot of 12-year-olds at a party complaining about "shorties" who are wasting their time. Oh, and there’s a quick cameo by the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 and its Timescape UI, which may also be considered by some as wasting people’s time. Video after the break, if you’re into that sort of thing. [via Twitter]

Spotify integrated into X10′s Mediascape and Timescape

Sony Ericsson (via the Sony Ericsson Product Blog) announced today that the Spotify  service will now be integrated deep into the Timescape and Mediascape shell on the SE Xperia X10. The integration allows Spotify to show as an online media service in Mediascape, and your recently played songs will appear in the Timescape timeline.  Check out the video — it’s pretty sweet.

The drawback for some of us (OK, a lot of us) is that Spotify isn’t available in the U.S., but then again, neither is the X10.  This is an idea I would like to see catch on, and other manufacturers with custom Android UI’s weaving Slacker or Pandora into the OS would be welcomed here.
