OK, it's not that we're not excited, it's just that it's not new.  It was way back in June that SE announced a change to the Xperia upgrade timeline, from early Q4 to late Q3. As September is the last month in the third quarter, it looks like we're still on that schedule.

Sony Ericsson has announced earlier this month that the X10 Mini, and the X10 Mini Pro will soon be available in new colors.  The Mini, (right) will be available with a gold shell, while the Mini Pro (left) will feature a pink sliding case.  I'll tell anyone within earshot that I'm not 100 percent sure I like the trend to giant phones, and these sure do look nice.  Too bad they only updated the case colors -- both the Mini and Mini Pro still run Android 1.6.

For what it's worth, the new colors should be available next month, and an update to Android 2.1 sometime before hell freezes over in Q4 of this year.  SE -- we love your phones.  They feel great, and have excellent call quality.  Please realize that we Android fans need the OS updates more than we need food, and make phones that look this hot run a current version of the software! After a long wait, AT&T and Sony Ericsson have finally launched the Xperia X10 here in the States. As a refresher, the phone sports a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor, 4-inch TVT LCD screen, 8 GB of on-board memory paired with a 2 GB microSD card, and an 8-megapixel camera. Also important to remember: the phone is running on Android 1.6 ("Donut") right now along with Sony's Timescape and Mediascape UI's. Sony has been vague on when it would see Eclair and has made no mention of Froyo yet.

AT&T will get one into your hands today for $150 with a two-year contract, or you can get it off-contract for a surprisingly low $350. If you are interested, make sure to check out our hands-on of the phone from way back in April. [AT&T]

And sure enough, the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is on its way to AT&T. (See our hands-on) The 4-inch phone is bringing its custom Android experience to the U.S. on Aug. 15, complete with 8-megapixel camera, LED flash, 8GB of on-board memory, 2GB microSD card, and the Timescape and Mediascape UIs.

The X10 will cost $149.99 after two-year contract and rebate. Off-contract pricing wasn't initially announced.

Also not announced was what version of Android will be on board at launch, though we have to assume it'll be the same Android 1.6 that we've previously seen, and hope that it'll be upgraded later this year. Full presser after the break. [PR News Wire]

Update: Remember that Sony Style countdown clock? Well, it skipped the final two hours, and indeed it was showing the X10. Interesting is that it's listing the phone for $129.99 -- $20 less than the press release, but maybe that's an in-store preorder special. Or not.

So Sony Style has this clock a countin' down, and judging from the reflection (and the smattering of "X10" from the HTML on the page), we could well be looking at the Xperia X10. When last we saw the X10, it was April, it was running Android 1.6,  with no upgrade in sight (and the last official word we've had is late Q3), the software wasn't actually production-ready, we left the damn screen protector on -- basically, we were totally underwhelmed with what otherwise should have been an exciting phone.

But it's been rumored for AT&T for as long as we can remember, and maybe now we're going to see it. So wake up early Monday morning, folks (about 11:30 a.m. EDT), and we'll see what's in store. [Sony Style via Gizmodo]

Normally when we see celebrity smartphone unboxings we see names like Michaluk, Bohn, Ritchie and Nickinson. The good news: An update is rolling out the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 as we speak. The bad news: Nope, it's still stuck on Android 1.6. Here's what you are getting, though:

This update focuses on improving the general performance, speed and responsiveness of Xperia X10. For example, there are speed improvements in messaging tasks and camera UI. In addition we add a free back up and restore application so you’ll never lose your settings and information. In selected markets, PlayNow™ with premium apps and games will also be added.

Interested in seeing the parts of the the new Sony Xperia X10 Mini? Actually, this is actually the E10i model, which is the European version, but it has basically the same guts as its American cousin, the E10a. Clear? We Android lovers are tinkerers at heart, so we never pass up a chance for a good old fashioned tear-down.

According to iFixit, they had no problems taking this little guy apart, and told us that replacing components within the phone should be pretty easy as well. During the operation, a couple of semi-interesting things came to their attention: The 3.7V 950 mAh Li-Polymer battery’s capacity is 22 percent less than the iPhone 3GS’s, but both phones deliver the same 53mAh’s per gram (another point for Android efficiency, we suppose). Also, the digitizer (the touch screen sensor) has the exact same model number as the one in Microsoft’s Kin Two, which could come in handy if you would ever need to replace the screen.  [Source: iFixit]

No carriers' locked systems are safe when Android hackers set their sights on them.  Some are easy, some are tough, but eventually they all fall.  This time in the spotlight is the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10.  With the unknowns surrounding the fate of Froyo on the X10, and the less than speedy track record of SE, this one is extra special for everyone who loves the feel and looks of the X10's hardware but isn't quite satisfied with the software.  The other three people don't have to root :)
